Tips to Instantly Look More Put Together

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

As college students, we often do not have the time or energy to put on a full face of makeup or look like we’re about to walk a runway before an 8 a.m. class. That being said, sometimes we want to feel at least a little put together in our chaotic lives without losing an extra hour of sleep. Therefore, below I have provided a list of tips and tricks about how I make myself look and feel more put together with minimal effort. Simply putting on a pair of booties or applying mascara can be a major confidence boost and make you feel more mentally prepared for the day.

1. Make a statement

Even if I am having a no-makeup, effortless kind of day, I still want to look and feel put together (hence the purpose of this article). I just recently started getting into wearing statement pieces, such as a funky pair of earrings or a cheetah-print belt. Even something as simple as wearing a pair of glasses can add a whole new dimension to your overall look.

2. Wear what you feel most confident and comfortable in

There is nothing worse than going through your day in the most uncomfortable outfit that is a total confidence buster. Everybody feels comfortable in something different. For example, I feel most comfortable in a pair of high-waisted mom jeans and a long-sleeve top or turtleneck. For others, it might be throwing on sweats and an oversized t-shirt. It shouldn’t matter what others think of your outfit as long as you are comfortable in what you are wearing.

3. Put your best foot forward with a pair of booties

Something about putting on a pair of heels not only completes any outfit but makes you feel like you are on top of the world. That doesn’t mean you need to buy a pair of 6-inch stilettos you can barely walk in. It goes back to the idea of wearing what you are most comfortable in. Invest in a simple, yet chic pair of heels that will add an extra pep to your step.

4. Color Coordinate or go Monochromatic

One of my personal favorite power moves is dressing in all-black. This is one of the easiest looks to pull together because black goes with everything. There is nothing more classic than pairing together black slacks, a comfy sweater, and a pair of heels. If monochrome is not your style, try coordinating your shoes with your top, or a bold lip with jewelry of the same color scheme. It is aesthetically pleasing when several pieces of your look effortlessly pair together.

5. Posture is everything

I have to thank my high school dance teacher for drilling the importance of posture into my mind. Good posture is not only beneficial for spinal health in the long run, but standing tall with your shoulders back radiates confidence. No look is ever complete without you standing strong.

I hope some of these simple, yet effective tips help inspire you to try out a new look or spice up your favorite pieces. I like to browse Pinterest or look at those around me for inspiration and find a look I may have never considered wearing prior. Overall, don’t be afraid to take fashion risks and step outside of your comfort zone; you never know what you might find!
