Showing Appreciation for Your Loved Ones on Valentines Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

Ah, Valentines Day. Love is in the air, roses and chocolate are everywhere, and you are your significant other are out on a date to celebrate. For some of us, this is what our Valentine’s Day looks like. Yet for the rest of us, it’s just another day. On this day, we all get consumed with the idea of being in a relationship or being in love. But regardless of whether or not you’re in a relationship, Valentine’s Day should be about more than just that.

While it is very important and special to spend time with your significant other on Valentine’s Day, don’t forget about the other people in your life who you love. Although Valentine’s Day is deemed more of a “romantic” holiday, it’s also a great time to show appreciation for your friends, family, and those who are important in your life.

I remember when I was younger and still living at home year round, my mom would always get me a little something special on Valentines Day, whether it be chocolate or a teddy bear from CVS. It was such a small gesture, but went a long way. Of course I know that my mom loves me, but she made sure I knew that on Valentines Day. My mom has therefore taught me a lesson that we should all follow on Valentines Day: it’s not just a day for romantic love, but a day to show your love for the important people in your life.

Love is in the air, as it should be. Let your loved ones know you love them! Whether it be sending a quick text to your family that lives states away, or knocking on your best friends door to give them a hug, be sure they know you love them.

This Valentines Day, I plan out going out to a nice dinner with all of my friends. I’m always happy when I’m with them, and I know they care about me just as much as I care about them. So we’re celebrating that! Being appreciative of your friends is one of the most important things you can do in college. Even though you may not have known your college friends for that long, you’re with them all the time. College is a big part of life, and you’ve been there to support each other through it all! These next four years are going to go by so fast, and you’re only in college once. Cherish each moment you have with your friends! Today, make sure they know you appreciate and love them. This could be as simple as texting them, or go all out and treat yourselves to dinner.

Although you may wish for someone to love you on this day, know that you ARE loved. You are so loved, by so many people. It may not be a significant other, but never lose sight of the fact that there is someone out there who cares for you deeply.
