Avril Lavigne’s New Song and Other News That’ll Bring You Back to the 2000s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

You heard it here, the 2000s are back! If you couldn’t already tell from all the tracksuits, denim, and platform shoes, yes, Y2K fashion has certainly made its way back to the mainstream. Of course, I would be remiss not to begin this article with news about the one and only Britney Spears. After battling a 13-year long conservatorship that controlled her life, Britney finally gained autonomy over her own life. This deserves its own article, though, as the singer’s fight for freedom is so much more than a simple “comeback.” Along with Britney’s incredible news, other notable 2000s celebrities are now making headlines once again. Here are some of our personal favorites:

  1. Avril Lavigne releases new song, “Bite Me”

Known for her pop punk style, Avril Lavigne made waves in the 2000s for her outgoing and unique music. The “Girlfriend,” “Sk8er Boy,” and “Complicated” singer released her newest single on November 10, 2021. Fans were surprised with the appearance of another major Y2K persona, Travis Barker. The Blink-182 drummer joined in on the song’s drumming and production work, and appeared in the music video as well.

  1. Lindsay Lohan is acting again

This winter, you can watch Lindsay Lohan make her return to the big screen in her new holiday rom-com. Lohan is set to star alongside Glee star Chord Overstreet. The film, which has yet to have announced its title, is set to premiere on Netflix in the upcoming holiday season. The actress has starred in a number of popular 2000s movies such as “Mean Girls,” “The Parent Trap,” and “Freaky Friday.” Lohan has appeared sporadically in films since then, but the new rom-com feels like a warm welcome return to her lighthearted, more family-friendly roles that made her a star in the 2000s.

  1. Paris Hilton is married!

Paris Hilton owned the 2000s. The heiress to the Hilton hotel fortune rose to fame alongside best friend Nicole Richie on their reality show The Simple Life. From their matching denim blazers, to Nicole’s chunky highlights, to Paris’s iconic 21st birthday dress, the pair embodied Y2K fashion. Paris has since become known for both throwing and attending extravagant parties. And this year, Paris threw her most iconic party yet- her wedding party! The socialite married venture capitalist Carter Reum this year in a large ceremony at her grandfather’s Bel Air estate. And at the wedding…

  1. Kim reunites with Paris… as her assistant

After a falling out with her childhood best friend Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton became close friends with now- social media star Kim Kardashian. But before Kim made a name for herself, she actually worked for Paris.  The best friends could often be seen jet setting across the world, before the pair eventually parted ways and Kim began starring in her family’s reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians. The two have been spotted together from time to time since, with their most extravagant get-together yet at Paris’s wedding. Okay, so Kim didn’t actually return as her assistant. And hey, she was a closet organizer, not an assistant! But Kim could be seen fluffing the tulle of Paris’s wedding dress, in good ol’ closet organizer fashion.

  1. JLo and Ben Affleck are back together

This one takes us back to the early 2000s. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck first became a couple in 2002 after meeting on the set of their movie Gigli. The couple got engaged that same year, before postponing their wedding and then officially splitting in 2004. Both seemingly moved on, as Affleck dated a string of women since and JLo entered a serious relationship with baseball player Alex Rodriguez. After breaking up with her boyfriend, however, JLo reunited with her old flame Ben Affleck. In a recent interview, Affleck referred to their reunited romance as “beautiful,” making all of our 2000s-loving hearts swoon.

And finally, THE FASHION. 2000s fashion has been making a definite comeback, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon. A few notable pieces include:

  • Tracksuits
  • Denim everything
  • Platform shoes
  • Jelly sandals
  • Holes and cutouts
  • Belly chains

If you want to feel like a Y2K celebrity in your own right, incorporate these items into your wardrobe, snap a couple pictures on your flip phone, and upload them to Myspace, because girl, that’s hot.
