10 Books That Will Get You Excited for Summer Reading

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

You’ve spent the past two semesters reading nonstop. Now it’s your chance to read what you want to, with no reading quiz afterwards! It’s time to prepare your reading list and grab these 10 recommendations from the library for your pool-side/beach shore/backyard reading pleasure!

Believe it or not, Pretty Little Liars was originally a popular book series before the more well-known TV adaptation. But don’t be fooled because the TV does not follow the books too much. These books are full of plot twists and cliff hangers that will give you a thrilling summer!

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is an extremely clever book that was turned into a Tony Award-winning Broadway play! Its narrator, Christopher, tells the story of finding out his past and what has happened to his old neighbor’s dog. It pulls at your heart-strings and invites you into Christopher’s inner mind.

Unapologetically sarcastic, Me, Earl and the Dying Girl is a hilarious teen novel about film-making, girls and cancer. You won’t regret reading this young-adult novel once you start laughing out loud.

This wouldn’t be a summer reading list without a book from famous romance novelist Nicholas Sparks. Safe Haven is a different kind of Sparks novel, full of mystery and a really interesting plot twist!

It’s every young kids’ dream– hitting the road and touring with a band. But with The Disenchantments, it’s a bit different. Narrator Colby worries about friend Bev after she announces she’ll be abandoning their plans of backpacking around Europe and going to college after all. This book tells the story of their last summer together and splitting up from friends after high school.

A different kind of romance novel, The Silver Linings Playbook is heartbreaking yet funny. It’s such a fantastic book that is perfect for a long car trip or a day on the beach (and then you can watch the movie afterwards!).

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, The Help was super popular a few years back but is still a good read now. You won’t want to put it down!

Maybe you’re looking for a non-ficitional book and I Am Malala is the perfect choice. Malala Yousafzai recently won the Noble Peace Prize and her remarkable life as told in the book shows how deserving this incredible girl is.

How about a throwback? The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is an absolute summer classic. Join best friends Carmen, Lena, Tibby and Bridget in their many different summers and how a magic pair of pants holds their friendship together, even while miles apart.

Published posthumously, Marina Keegan’s The Opposite of Loneliness is a collection of Keegan’s genius short stories and essays. This is another book you won’t be able to put down because her short stories are that good.
