A Warrior Comes Back After Two Years

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lynn chapter.

On January 26th, Demi Lovato performed at the Grammy’s to show that she is ready to continue her singing career. Throughout Lovato’s childhood, she suffered with eating disorders, depression, and self-harm. When Lovato was just 18 years old, she checked into a rehab facility in order to help her physical and emotional issues on November 1, 2010. Just years later, Lovato developed an addiction to drugs. She had tried cocaine for the first time when she was with a group of friends, and after she tried it she fell in love with it. Her mother warned her about it, but Lovato did not care. It wasn’t until July 24, 2018 did Lovato experience a life changing moment.

The Los Angeles Fire Department received a phone call regarding a 25 year old female around 11:22 am. After being sober for six years, Lovato had relapsed. That 25 year old female was Lovato and it was reported that she had a drug overdose. After experiencing that relapse, she decided to check into rehab and take a break from performing. In that two year time frame, Lovato continued to write and record some songs. A popular being “Sober”, which is about Lovato reaching out to her family, friends, and fans for her overdose. She states that she did not mean for this to happen, yet she is undergoing help at the moment.  During the 2020 Grammys, she performed for the first time in two years with her new single titled “Anyone.” This song discusses how Lovato feels like no one is listening to her during this time in her life. She got so emotional while starting to perform that she had to restart. But sure enough, she gave it her all and delivered an emotional performance that resulted in a standing ovation from the audience.

Olivia is a senior at Lynn University. She is studying multimedia journalism with a minor in education. Before this, she would write every once in a while for herself, but her real passion for writing started during her senior year in high school when she illustrated the pain of losing a parent. She loves new experiences and getting to know different cultures, which is why she studied abroad in London over the summer of 2019. She hopes to continue writing and become a news anchor in a major city.
