Long-distance Relationships: Best Friend Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lynn chapter.

I remember meeting my best friend during Freshman orientation. My mom had just met another Spanish mom who had two kids the same age as my brother and me. She introduced me to her new friend’s daughter. At the time, I had no idea how this Spanish girl that I had just met would forever change my life and become my best friend.Over the next few days, the Spanish girl ended up being in some of my classes and part of my first friend group. The more I talked to her, the more I found out we had a lot in common and felt more comfortable with her.

After freshman year, my best friend moved away, and I had no clue if I would see her again. Luckily, I saw her again, and now it has been eight years since we have been friends. Seven out of eight years of our friendship has been long-distance. Even though we haven’t seen each other a lot, every time we talk and see each other again, it feels like no time has passed. We still laugh at the same jokes and talk for hours in a row. I think that I have become an expert when it comes to long-distance friendships, so I will be giving you some tips on how I’ve kept my friendship so strong for all these years.

Movie Nights

Just because you and your bestie are not in the same place doesn’t mean you can’t have a movie night! I suggest Facetiming while watching the movie. Netflix offers a Netflix party so you and your friend can watch a movie together at the same time. My best friend and I loved watching High School Musical on Disney Plus. It brought back our childhood memories, and we got a karaoke session too.

Long Facetime Calls

Whenever I call my bestie, I end up on the phone for hours. The conversation never ends as there is always something to talk about. These long FaceTime calls never get boring as there is so much to talk about. Even if you don’t speak to your friends every day, try to call them once a month to catch up and keep the friendship alive.

Game Nights

Game nights can still happen and be a lot of fun when you are far apart. Since Covid, there have been many games that you can play online with your friends. You can either play card games, board games, or even have a trivia night.

Plan a Vacation Together

We’ve all planned a vacation with friends even though you have no money in your bank account. With your long-distance bestie, plan a vacation to meet up or your dream vacation.  This is always a fun time because you get closer to seeing your friend. Sometimes the plans don’t work out, and other times they do; it is the best time ever.

Even though I live on the other side of the world and the odds are against us, we always make it work. After three years of not seeing each other, My best friend and I finally get to see each other in January, and I couldn’t be happier.
