I Like Big Brows & Cannot Lie: Ten Eyebrow Hacks That Saved My Brows

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lynn chapter.

Eyebrows are easily one of the most eye-catching features on your face. Eyebrows shape and draw attention to your eyes – brows are LITERALLY and FIGURATIVELY huge right now! It takes time, patience and a good technique to get the job done effectively. Even if you are not blessed with naturally thick and striking brows, I am here to show you ten life changing tips and recommended products to use.

LIGHTING IS EVERYTHING

Naturally, bad lighting in your bathroom is literally the enemy of incredible brows. In the past, I had a fluorescent light in my bathroom and it caused numerous amounts of bald spots while I was tweezing my eyebrows! You should only tweeze your eyebrows in natural lighting to really see those stray hairs that you’d never notice under non-natural lighting.

SYMMETRY IS OVERRATED!

Some of us are familiar with the famous saying “eyebrows are meant to be sisters, not twins.” A little variation in the width, arch and length are completely normal! It is actually super trendy to have your eyebrows a little outgrown at the moment.

THE BROW FADE

Brows that are filled in with a solid look are extremely harsh. A major trend at the moment are eyebrows filled in more naturally and lighter in the beginning, then more solid and darker at the “tail” end. A tip that can enhance this fade aesthetic is to use two different shades for your blending. Eyebrows are naturally lighter in the front and darker by the tail, therefore choosing colours that match this change will aid the fade look. A lighter colour should be used for the inside while a darker colour and more intense strokes should be used for the tail, blending these two colours together for the finished look.

TIMING IS KEY

Try not to rush your eyebrows, rather do your eyebrows at the end of your makeup routine and face to ensure your brows complement your entire look. Balance is the name of the game. FULL ON sassy eyebrows don’t really complement a more natural soft makeup look. Before doing your brows, wipe them with a makeup wipe to take off any foundation that might have built up. This ensures that your shape is not diluted and is more refined.

USE A SPOOL BRUSH

A spool brush is an extremely effective tool that can be used to brush over your eyebrows to ensure a more natural look. The “spoolie” brush can easily be purchased on Amazon for an affordable price!

STEP AWAY FROM THE MIRROR!

Ensure you are stepping away from the mirror every few minutes while you are filling in or tweezing your brows. This allows you to see the perspective on your whole face and stops you before you go over the top.

GEL IT

Gel isn’t only for your hair… use eyebrow gel to ensure the shape of your brows are set in place. Morphe has one of the best eyebrow gel products that I highly reccomend purchasing.

CHOOSE YOUR SHADE WISELY

There’s nothing worse than having a colour that actually does not match your face or natural hair colour. If you are a blonde, I would recommend choosing a colour that is two shades darker than your original hair colour. If you are a brunette, choose a slightly lighter shade. Hair that is red in tone should choose shades that are in taupe and black hair should choose a darker brown shade.

SOAP BROWS

Yes, soap brows. We all know how hard it is purchasing makeup products during this pandemic. Lockdown has temporarily closed many stores and it’s not so easy running into your local makeup store to purchase your product that just ran out. I recently finished my eyebrow gel and instead of waiting for my online orders, I came across an eyebrow hack that made my eyebrows fluffier than ever. Use a bar of soap with your spool brush to shape and set your eyebrows. IT’S THAT SIMPLE. Besides the fact that this technique is really inexpensive, soap really emphasised the brushed-up editorial look that eyebrow gel doesn’t quite achieve.

FINALLY, PICK THE BEST PRODUCTS

Not all eyebrows are the same, therefore choosing the products that suit you are extremely vital to level up your makeup look. Use brands like Urban Decay or Morphe!

The best part of eyebrows? Well, I’d say that it is the one thing you can get into shape without exercising!
