After nearly three and a half years, the mother of dragons is back… well not exactly, HBO created a prequel to the hit show Game of Thrones. The prequel is set back in time nearly 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen’s time. Many Game of Thrones fans and cast have been skeptical of the new show as no one was expecting anything else from the series after fans were greatly disappointed by the season 8 finale. As many fans are eager to see what is going to happen with this new show there are some new fans that have been wanting to see House of the Dragon before watching Game of Thrones. I decided to view the show for myself and see what to expect from the new spin-off series.
The first episode premiered on August 21, 2022. In the first scene viewers witness the Targaryen’s hold the power of the seven kingdoms. It was exciting for viewers to finally see the Targaryen’s ruling over the kingdoms, as in Game of Thrones the first episode Robert Baratheon (the king of the seven kingdoms at the time) describes how not all of the Targaryen’s have been killed, meaning that there is still a chance for them to retake the throne. King Jaehary’s I is the first Targaryen to sit on the Iron throne and as he is getting older, he must make a decision to declare a successor. He has a choice between his oldest descent, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen or the oldest male descendent, Prince Viserys. The decision became difficult as at the time the show was placed in 101 AC. Men were in charge and no one wanted a woman in charge. Later in time almost 172 years after this event, Daenerys is faced with the same difficulties as her ancestors. It is clear to see that Targaryen women don’t ever give up!
King Jaehary’s I ended up making a decision that may or may not end in war. The King chose Prince Viserys to rule and years later pass in the show and the now King Viserys has a young, brave, 11 year old daughter named Princess Rhaenyra. King Viserys’ wife was pregnant and ended up losing her life as well as her son’s life. The audience finds out she was pregnant with a boy that would have been the next heir. King Viserys brother (Daemon) is the commander of the city watch and with Daemon comes quite a temper and arrogance as most Targaryen men are known for. Daemon feels as though he should be the next heir when his brother passes away. The now King Jaehary’s is now split between his brother and his daughter for the new heir to the Iron throne.
The new show House of the Dragon has Game of Throne fans wanting more. Since the release of the show about 10 million people in the United States alone have been tuning in every week to see what this new show is about.
