Are Apples Going to Be the New Pumpkin Spice?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LUM chapter.

Welcome to the 2023 fall season. Which means it is the start of pumpkin spice season, PSL rules…Or so we thought?

This fall season apples are making a grand appearance. This legacy fruit is no longer a supporting fall player. While many enjoy drinking warm apple cider through the fall season, marketing has gravitated towards the beloved pumpkin spice for many years.

A few trends towards apple flavored items are showing up strong. According to Modern Report, there is something called “pumpkin fatigue.” We’ve all seen a pumpkin branded product and thought “is this really necessary?” Well, companies are catching on and moving toward apple flavored products as the next fall flavor.

Starting with the infamous creator of PSL; Starbucks. This fall season Starbucks dropped two new Apple flavored items: The Iced Apple Crisp Oat Milk Shaken Espresso and Baked Apple Croissant.

Starbuck’s competitor Dunkin’ has also released new apple flavored products. They released the apple cranberry refresher, apple cranberry coconut refresher, and the apple cider donut.

Coffee shops are not the only places consumers see the new apple trend. Apple-flavored products are popping up all over the place! Just two examples of this phenomenon are cleaning supply company Grove Collaborative releasing a limited-edition Harvest Apple scent and Target adding numerous apple inspired foods to their fall line up.

But do not fret dear readers! It does not seem that pumpkin is going to step down anytime soon and will share the fall taste flavor stage with apples. Fans will simply have new flavors to become their fall favorites.
