1. Fees Many places off-campus will often have fees that aren’t necessarily “hidden” but might come as a shock to most people- it certainly did to me! These fees include a deposit (normally one to two months’ worth of rent), utility hook-up fees, gas hook-up fees, and WiFi hookup fees! Make sure to prepare for these when moving in somewhere new and to check with your landlord before signing the lease!
2. Cleaning
While many places charge for cleaning before you move in, it is important to always check the apartment (or home) even after they “clean.” When my friends and I moved into our “cleaned” apartment, there was stuff around the bottom of our toilets, in the bathtubs, in the cabinets, etc. So we went and bought cleaning supplies and spent an entire day deep cleaning our apartment before moving ANYTHING in! Make sure to check for this and if you’re charged a cleaning fee then make sure to tell the landlord(s) about the lack of!
3. Curtain Rods
One expense I did NOT expect was buying curtain rods! Whether it be for the bathroom, laundry room, or the windows! While you can find cheaper rods at Walmart it’s definitely worth budgeting for when moving into any new place!
4. Dollar Store Savior
With all of the hidden fees, curtain rods, and cleaning we had to do to move in- the dollar store was our savior! We found cheap cleaning supplies that provided just as much cleanliness and on a budget it was fantastic! If you look on Pinterest there are also plenty of dollar store hacks for furniture, organization, and more! Don’t knock it ’til you try it!
5. Checking the issues
The last thing to know is to check EVERYTHING! Here’s a list:
-
Mold
-
Cleanliness
-
Old items left over
-
Broken cabinets or doors
-
Water pressure (in every bathroom and the kitchen)
-
Cabinet space
-
Lights
-
Washer and dryer (look inside)
-
Security
I hope this helps when you decide to move!
