Space Pets to the Rescue! Five Budget-Friendly Pet Costume Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Louisiana Tech chapter.

Halloween is creeping around the corner, one of the greatest distractions from midterms and the closing of the quarter! Focusing on making the best costume for the holidays is always a top priority, but don’t forget about your pet! Dressing up your dog or cat for the season can be a great way to let loose some pent-up creativity and bond with your friends. You can easily purchase these looks from shops around the web, but DIY’ing is just as fun. Here’s five different pet costume ideas to consider for this season.

1: Super Pups!

This costume idea is a great way to team up with your friends for a pet-friendly halloween party! For a smaller dog DIY, take a cheap onesie and decorate it like the superhero of your choosing. For larger dogs, look into children’s costume sets at budget-friendly stores! One of the cuter costumes I saw online is from Chewy, which has many budget-friendly costumes for your pet!

Here’s an example costume from Chewy: https://www.chewy.com/rubies-costume-company-robin-dog-cat/dp/156670?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=hg&utm_content=Rubie%27s%20Costume%20Company&utm_term=&gclid=CjwKCAjwxaXtBRBbEiwAPqPxcAbfCktTWxUrVN4wYfQdIF_lPuSMXbo7DdACOXolg-cEz4JJsqaiMRoCySAQAvD_BwE

2: Ghost-Woofs

A classic costume choice for decades, all you need for this cute look is a sheet that your pet is comfortable wearing for the night. Cut two eye holes and a larger hole for their nose and mouth, and you’re all set! Be sure to fasten the sheet to your pet’s collar so the sheet doesn’t get lost throughout the night! Also, make sure your pet is comfortable staying under this sheet for longer periods of time; don’t make your pet do anything they are uncomfortable with!

3: Busy Bees

This look can work for both dogs and cats (given your cat is comfortable wearing a costume). I personally had my cat leash-trained for years and loved taking her around in costumes on Halloween! A bee costume is simple to diy with a black and yellow striped shirt and some antenna made from pipe-cleaners.

One example of a bee costume for sale is online here: https://www.chewy.com/frisco-led-bumble-bee-dog-cat/dp/187461?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=hg&utm_content=Frisco&utm_term=&gclid=CjwKCAjwxaXtBRBbEiwAPqPxcN4wuPX7ynkSFsQwUgFlmXlp-cKQnY6w38QqSxTgmwPJyqa4H0eTpBoCm1QQAvD_BwE

4: Taco Cat

A beloved meme for the past few years, a taco cat costume is sure to get some laughs at any Halloween party. With an entertaining costume, who wouldn’t enjoy having fun with their pet? While this costume is hard to DIY, pet costumes are relatively inexpensive to find. By the way, this costume idea isn’t limited to cats- dogs are just as entertaining as tacos!

5: Spider Doggos!

Spider costumes are an easy way to scare your friends with your pets for the holidays. With a black dog (or cat!), you can easily DIY a spider costume using fuzzy wires or small dowel rods pinned to a black onesie. These costumes are also easily found around the internet for affordable prices. If you’re afraid of large spiders, I’d stray away from this costume, as this can seem very realistic in the dark.

A cute spider-pet costume can be found on amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Vehomy-Halloween-Festival-Decoration-Costumes/dp/B07WNDLV74/ref=asc_df_B07WNDLV74/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=380797622345&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5767263955602920146&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1017923&hvtargid=aud-799728744414:pla-818252388916&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=77955826015&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=380797622345&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5767263955602920146&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1017923&hvtargid=aud-799728744414:pla-818252388916

Whether you choose to use one of these ideas or come up with your own costume, be sure to include your pets in the festivities over the next few weeks. Happy spooky season and happy Halloween!
