Do you have trouble with skipping classes in college, whether it’s intentional or you just can’t seem to get up in time to actually make it so you just lay there in bed and feel horrible for not going? Well, that makes two of us. Those early morning classes can be a real pain but sometimes you end up stuck with them and question how the quarter is going to go and how many classes you’ll actually make it to. Trust me, I feel your pain.

During my freshman year at LA Tech, I had an 8 am history class and I could barely make it every day. It wasn’t just the fact that I made poor decisions to stay up late because I was finally free of high school life and wanted to have fun and enjoy my first year of freedom. I just couldn’t seem to get up in time for it. I’m here to tell you all about the ways I overcame my struggles and how I actually managed to start going to class.

I realized that I had to break out of my shell and finally communicate with my professors about my sleeping problems. They were very understanding and were actually happy to inform me of things that I had missed in class. Although they were very nice and understanding, I knew I shouldn’t take advantage of that because I wasn’t in high school anymore. They weren’t going to hold my hand and treat me like a child anymore. The pros of becoming an adult, right?

There are a lot of other factors that could prevent you from going to class, such as depression or anxiety. Skipping a class could lead to worry and sadness, which could make you feel overwhelmed and prevent you from going to your next class. If you deal with depression or anxiety, it’s okay to seek out help. It’s harder dealing with things like that on your own. Making sure you don’t oversleep is a good way to stop yourself from skipping class. I know for a fact that if I don’t set multiple alarms, then I’ll definitely oversleep. Trying to avoid those snooze buttons are definitely hard but not impossible to do. If you feel like you’ll wake up 20 minutes before class and won’t have time to actually prepare yourself for the class, then try getting everything ready the night before. If you fail at this, don’t let it be a reason why you decide to skip class! Getting to class early can also be another way to prevent skipping it. I know that walking into class late feels uncomfortable, especially when the professor is already in the middle of a lecture and you walk in and everyone else in the classroom glances at you. We’ve all been there plenty of times before. I know we all can have those mindsets of “I’m already late to class, I might as well just skip it”. Don’t let that be an excuse to skip! We’re in college now. Although the professors would prefer it if you didn’t show up late, they’d rather have you there getting your education than not at all.

Finally, don’t let your negative thoughts get to you. If you constantly give yourself a small pep talk and tell yourself that you can go to class, then you can do it. As cliche as it sounds, you can do anything you put your mind to. I know going to class doesn’t seem like it would give the immediate reward of staying in bed and sleeping or hanging out with your friends, but remind yourself that skipping classes does have its consequences. Education itself is very rewarding and it can take you far in life. Don’t ever forget that!
