3 Reasons To Love Valentine’s Day (Even If You’re Single!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

Well, the time has come. It’s early February, and the holiday we’ve all been dreading is just around the corner: Valentine’s Day. Hearts, cupids, and lovey-dovey Instagram posts as far as the eye can see. In other words: any single person’s worst nightmare. Or is it? I know it’s against the laws of physics or something, but I, a single person, am actually a pretty big fan of Valentine’s Day. Here are 3 reasons why:

1. Candy

The most obvious answer. First of all, there are plenty of heart-shaped chocolate bars or pink-and-red fruity candies that are only around during Valentine’s Day season. But more importantly, as soon as Valentine’s Day is over, every drug store practically gives the stuff away.

2. Seeing People Get Into the Spirit

There are 3 broad categories of people on Valentine’s Day. There are the mushy couples who are just so in love, the cynical people who insist that Valentine’s Day was invented by Hallmark to make more money, and my favorite kinds of people: the ones who just enjoy what the holiday has to bring. The bank teller with the heart antenna headband. The elementary school who has a party for their students. The receptionist with sweethearts candy on her desk. These are all people who take Valentine’s Day for exactly what it is: a cheesy holiday. But they make the best of it. And if they can, why can’t I?

3. Realizing That You Are Awesome On Your Own

In my opinion, when you get annoyed over Valentine’s Day, you let the negative feelings win. Why should we care if we’re not in relationships? Valentine’s Day is just like any other day of the year. And am I a cool and awesome person every day of the year? Yes! So what makes Valentine’s Day different?

Remember, Valentine’s Day is a chance to show your love to all the people who you’re glad to have in your life – make the best of the holiday, even if you don’t have a significant other!
