The Twelve Essentials of Christmas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

As we near the end of the first semester, and my anticipation for the festivities increases, I have decided to share with you what I consider to be the twelve essentials that every girl needs this Christmas.

The first essential of Christmas…

The winter coat. I consider this item of clothing to be like pasta to a student – an absolute necessity. Not only is the winter coat a must have due to its obvious practicalities, but it will be worn over every outfit every day, which means making the right purchase is even more important and only makes the decision of what style to choose even harder! My personal choice would be the hooded parker, as I prefer a more casual style that keeps me cosy in the chilly wind up north.

The second essential of Christmas…

My next essential, inspired by my flatmate, is the scented candle. However, this can’t be any old candle, it is vitally important that it has a limited edition Christmas scent that fills your room with festive spirit, and from experience, is so relaxing that it sends you to sleep.

The third essential of Christmas…

At a time of year when your excitement for Christmas needs to be expressed, festive nails are a must have! Seasonal nails should be either red, green, gold or silver and must include details such as silver glitter or tiny images of snowmen. Painting your nails with a holiday twist is not only a great way to celebrate the build up to Christmas but also a fun way to procrastinate when perhaps you should be revising!

The fourth essential of Christmas…

Christmas is the only time of the year where everyone accepts that cheesy festive tunes are an essential. Christmas songs can be played at home, in the car, at uni; anywhere you choose, allowing you to share the festive spirit with family and friends in an embarrassingly loud sing along. We all have our favourite Christmas album that we can’t wait to play on repeat every December, mine would have to be Micheal Buble’s Christmas, with his version of Jingle Bells being my top rated tune.

The fifth essential of Christmas…

Now, what could be better than Christmas music? Christmas films of course! The perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday in December is to cuddle up on the sofa and have a Christmas movie marathon. Of course this must include my top rated festive films – Elf, The Grinch and last but not least The Polar Express

The sixth and seventh essentials of Christmas…

Next, onto the essential Christmas snacks and drinks!! Nothing goes better with a festive movie marathon than hot chocolate (mini marshmallows must be included) and mince pies. Personally I can’t survive the Christmas holidays without them!

The eighth essential of Christmas…

Now some of you will immediately turn your noses up at my next essential due to its often-uneven outcome. However, I do believe that when it comes to wearing those skimpy Christmas party dresses, then fake tan could be your saviour when trying to hide those luminous white legs. Do it right and you may even be able to convince everyone you’ve just been on an exotic winter break.

The ninth essential of Christmas…

As we near the end of the semester and our student loans are quickly running out, some of us may not be able to splash out on a new festive outfit to impress at the Christmas parties. This is where my next essential will come in handy: statement jewellery. What better way to make a plain outfit look swanky and new than chunky necklaces and big earrings? They can be found online and in stores for a very attractive student friendly price.

The tenth essential of Christmas…

The talk of festive celebrations brings me on nicely to my next essential. What better way is there to recover from the antics of the previous nights Christmas party than relaxing in the tub with a luxury facemask? Help your skin to look its best again after smothering it with foundation. Give yourself a well deserved pamper when you’re feeling sorry for yourself after the effects of a hard night out start to sneak up on you.

The eleventh essential of Christmas…

To make your bathtub pamper session even better why not add a bath bomb? Take the festive spirit to the tub and splash out on a Christmas themed smelly and turn your bathroom into a winter wonderland. My personal choice of bath bomb would definitely be a Lush seasonal special that changes the colour of the water and even makes it smell like Christmas!

The twelfth essential of Christmas…

And finally, how else could I end my list of essentials than with the one and only novelty Christmas jumper. Once again Christmas is the only time of year that allows you and the family to whip out the old festive jumpers with the protruding knitted 3D Santa hat and scarf, and get away with proudly walking around the house in them! I believe that Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without them!
