This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

This week Her Campus Leeds talks to Emily McNulty about all thiings Modern Dance.

Firstly, can you introduce yourself?

Hi, I’m Emily and the competition rep for the Modern Dance Society. I’m currently working towards a PhD in tribology – don’t know what that is? Don’t worry you’re not the only one!

Can you tell us a little more about Modern Dance Society?

We are the largest dance society, and we specialise in teaching classes in tap, jazz and contemporary, from beginner all the way to advanced. We have professional teachers that come in on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday to teach the classes. We also have a competition class open for the students taking part in the advanced classes.

Competitions are coming up, where will you be competing?

Firstly, we are competing in Liverpool which is hosted by Liverpool John Moores, including a weekend away which we are all very excited for! The following week we are competing in Sheffield, hosted by the University of Sheffield which we have been competing at for the last 4 years! Finally, we are competing at our very own competition here in Leeds. This is the first time we have hosted a competition so we are very excited to get the ball rolling.

How is everything going so far?

It’s all going well so far, only one more rehearsal before Liverpool but the dances are coming together nicely! We are also learning dances for the upcoming show in a few weeks’ time!

Is there some rivalry between the different dance groups at Leeds Uni?

I guess you could say there was a little rivalry, especially when you’re at a competition and you’re competing against another dance society from your own university. I think a little bit of rivalry is good though, it makes you want that first place trophy a little bit more and pushes you to try even harder. Leeds are hosting one of the dance competitions this year!

Who’s attending and what can we expect?

As it’s our first competition we don’t have a great deal of universities coming to the competition but we’re hoping this will grow in the years to come. This year we have Leeds Beckett, University of Hull and Coventry university competing in Leeds, as well as ourselves and the Ballet society! It should be a great day, lots of fun to be had although I have to say that I’m a little nervous. Hosting and organizing a competition isn’t my forte but hopefully I’ll have done alright
