Calling ALL Collegiettes! Let’s put the Beauty Back into Beautiful!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

It’s the evening of your big date and an uninvited spot decides to tag along for the thrill. In such a dire situation, concealer really can seem like a lifesaver! It’s easy to forget that certain make- up brands and cosmetics are in fact the opposite of life savers. Every year across the world millions of animals including dogs, cats, monkeys and rabbits die due to unnecessary cosmetic testing in a bid to make us look beautiful, which is probably the ugliest form of beauty I’ve ever heard of! As women we are the target consumer, which gives us a powerful voice when it comes to showing corporate companies what we will and won’t tolerate in the name of beauty.

Actions definitely do speak louder than words so let’s use our purchasing power (and let’s face it we’ve got a lot of it) to show such companies that we won’t put up with animal testing anymore! If you’re wondering which brands DON’T test on animals here are a few of my favourites…

Urban Decay

Urban Decay offers a great range of cruelty-free products for everyday use and party wear which are great quality. Their eye make-up is one of my favourites as they literally have everything covered from eyeliner to eye shadow!

Urban Decay Supercurl Curling Mascara does a great job of lengthening lashes and curling them at the same time for just £15.00/$20.00.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion really does work wonders and brightens up the eyes (especially after a long night out – an essential for looking your best during that 9.00am lecture!)

Eyeshadow Primer Potion comes in four different shades and costs £14.50/$20.00

Alima Pure

Although an American company, when it comes to eye shadow, Alima Pure really is impossible to resist. Their Shimmer Eyeshadow range has 49 different colours to choose from, so there is definitely a colour for every occasion and every skin tone! And the best bit is not one product is tested on animals…..so what are you waiting for?

$11.00 (about £7): www.alimapure.com (Alima Pure also ship products overseas)

Beauty Without Cruelty

As the name suggests, this company is dedicated to making beauty beautiful again! Beauty Without Cruelty has over 30 years of experience in producing make up products that are cruelty free and they are environmentally friendly too.

Ultimate Natural Liquid Foundation comes in 6 different shades and uses a combination of natural plant extracts such as jojoba, avocado oil and vitamin E which is great for a flawless complexion.

£11.99/$23.95

BM Beauty

BM Beauty is one of the best cruelty-free make up brands when it comes down to lip gloss! They offer 6 different colours from bright shades such as Cherry Bomb to more subtle tones such as Nude. At the bargain price of £12.00 it really would be rude not to……

Make-Up International

Even Hollywood has cottoned on to the fact that make-up tested on animals just really is not cool, which is why Make-Up International is the preferred choice of make-up artists who have worked with stars such as Bette Davis, Barbra Streisand, Sophia Loren and Denzel Washington to name just a few!

Make-Up International allows customers to choose from a wide range of eye shadows to create their own eye shadow palette! There are 57 different shades to choose from and 3 different palette sizes so you really can mix and match your favourite colours depending on how many colours you want – perfect if you just can’t decide which is your favourite colour! The palette sizes offer a combination of 3, 12 or 24 colours. (Prices vary depending on which palette you choose) .

Afterglow Cosmetics

Afterglow Cosmetics is a brilliant brand which offers products that aren’t tested on animals and which only contain natural ingredients. Their Organic Pencil Eyeliner is a personal favourite of mine. It comes in 3 colours and is really easy to apply!

$22.00 (about £14) each: http://www.afterglowcosmetics.com (International shipping also provided)

Montagne Jeunesse

Montagne Jeunesse really cannot be beaten when it comes to face masks! Their face mask range is affordable, cheap and comes in a variety of yummy flavours such as Strawberry, Chocolate and Mango.  They are great for cleansing the skin and removing dirt from the pores, leaving your skin smooth and smelling great!

£1.09 (per sachet)

The above make-up products prove that beauty really can be beautiful in the right way and that there really is no need to kill millions of animals in the name of beauty! As an animal lover I have always condemned any kind of unnecessary cruelty to animals, which is why I ask every Collegiette in the UK and the USA to use their individual purchasing power to take the first step towards revolutionising the make-up industry. A Dog is a man’s best friend so surely it’s about time we started speaking up for them- I know I’ll be standing up for mine!
