You Should Befriend the People in Your Major, NOT Compete with Them

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

College can be a very stressful time, especially when you are in your major classes. There are a bunch of students sitting around you, all wanting the same objective as you, a great future filled with a lot of promise. It can be easy to think that you need to compete, but actually, there are way more benefits from befriending them instead of competing.

The great thing about meeting people in your major is that you can help each other learn. In group projects, you can ask questions and get a reliable answer that will help you throughout your career. You can learn from each other as well, by sharing different ideas and analyzing them together. It allows you to collaborate and try out new ideas.

They can be helpful in finding connections and resources for you, as well. Everyone knows someone, and especially when having friends in your major, they may be able to introduce you to someone who could be your future employer or mentor.

Another reason this is important is that it builds character. By not competing with your peers, it is showing that you are mature and that you want to focus on building yourself up for the better, and not tearing others down to get their way.

It can help you get prepared for the real world. When you are older and have a career of your own, you will have to have meetings and consultations with people who do the same thing that you do. Being kind to them and listening to their ideas will allow you to get more work done as well as collaborate to come up with the best possible ideas and solutions.

You both know different things. You may come from different backgrounds and ways of life, which would make for the ideas that surround your thoughts on your major different. For example, I am an events management major from a small town. The events I know may be totally different from someone who is from a big city. But, this is also a good thing because we will be able to learn from each other and become the best versions of ourselves as we can.

College should be a time of immense learning, understanding, and fun. Do not let competition and worry get in the way, as it will not allow you to be the best version of yourself and help you advance in your career in the future.
