A few years ago, all anyone talked about was Victoria’s Secret padded push-up bras. But now the table has turned and everyone seems to be obsessed with bralettes from brands like Colsie and Aerie. We are currently undergoing a bra revolution, as people everywhere are pitching traditional bras for more comfortable options without padding or underwire.

But why are we seeing these changes?

During the pandemic, fewer people were going out and we saw an increase in people working at home. Many women choose not to wear bras while they were staying at home or opted for comfortable options. In 2020, wireless bra sales increased by 14%, and pullover bra sales increased by 31%. While the lockdown may no longer be in place, this seems to be a long-term shift with popular bralettes selling out in stores and online.

There has also been a deeper cultural shift too. As more women are tired of being sexualized over their bodies and want to prioritize bodily autonomy, they no longer care what other people think. They want to be comfortable in the clothing they are buying. They also have a healthy relationship with their body and are comfortable with how they look. In today’s world, they are choosing their comfort over the appearance of the male gaze.

Will we ever going back to push up bra’s dominating the lingerie industry? We’ll have to wait to find out.
