Coming to the end of the term, are you stressed out with more assignments and exams? This time, I’ll recommend to you my favorite film Weathering With You which will allow you to forget the real world and immerse yourself in it.

Weathering With You is a 2019 Japanese animated film directed by Makoto Shinkai, also known for his previous film Your Name.

The story features a high school student, Hodaka, who has moved to Tokyo from a small island. His desire to start a new life in the city drives him to leave home and head for Tokyo. However, having no family or friends in Tokyo, Hodaka is initially overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the city and struggles to find work. Then he meets Keisuke, an author who runs a small publishing company and ends up working as his assistant. While working for Keisuke, Hodaka learns about legends and myths related to the weather in Japan.

Then Hodaka meets Hina. She can control the weather by praying. Hodaka is friends with her and her brother, Nagi, and uses her powers to start a business as a “sunny girl.” They change the weather from rainy to sunny for those who need sunny days. They were very happy. Hina and Nagi had lost their parents, and Hodaka, who had moved to Tokyo alone, needed this business to make money to survive.

However, their actions upset the weather balance and a big storm hit Tokyo. Hodaka and Hina pray to the sky and try to right their wrongs, but their efforts are not rewarded. Meanwhile, Keisuke discovers that the police are looking for Hina as the culprit behind the unnatural weather phenomenon. He offers cooperation to Hodaka and Hina. However, they both refuse and decide to take responsibility for their actions. Hina tries to stop the storm by using her power as the “sunny girl” and sacrifices herself in return. Hina’s life-saving action calms the storm, but Hodaka is not convinced. He wishes to give her back to him, even if the rain continues to fall.

The scene then changes.

Three years later, Tokyo has sunk into the sea and it rains every day. The film ends with a shot of the two reunited in Tokyo, where the abnormal weather continues.

I think this film has the message that even if there is a major natural disaster or incident that changes the world, there is no life that can be sacrificed for the sake of it. In our busy lives, we sometimes find ourselves at a loss. When we watch this film, it reminds us of what we should really cherish, the existence of our loved ones, and what happiness is.

The film is visually beautiful and the music is memorable.

I hope this heartwarming film will heal your heart.
