The Anxiety of Trying New Things

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

In a world where perfectionism is valued, it can be nerve-wracking to try new things, especially as you get older. We are often indirectly shamed by society for attempting to try new hobbies, particularly ones that may be seen as juvenile. It is seen as more acceptable when trying hobbies as a young child, such as art or a sport, and to then not be great at them (as you are just starting out). So why shouldn’t the same grace be given to all beginners, regardless of age?

This is something that I have often struggled with, even as a kid. If I didn’t start something new and instantly picked up on it, I tended to lose motivation. This mindset stopped me from ever getting really good at anything, such as sports or artistic hobbies, because I did not want to continue when I wasn’t good at it. This mindset can be debilitating for both children and adults. Let’s face it, we need hobbies. It is not good for a person to only have responsibilities in life. While you may love your job or love what you’re studying, your mental health will thank you for also having something that you can do to take your mind off of things.

I recently have been inspired by TikTok user @siobhan.lauren, who has been documenting her journey of trying new things without the fear of embarrassment. Her videos have encouraged me to really think about the positive benefits of having these hobbies and how they outweigh my impulsive need to be perfect at them. She shared a video with an empowering mindset that I’ve really been thinking on: “Don’t deprive yourself of the joy of trying new things because you’ve been conditioned to believe that mastery is the only worthwhile pursuit.” I think this statement is extremely powerful, and I feel grateful to have come across it.

This inspiration has caused me to take the next steps in my own journey of trying new things. I recently was able to have this discussion with a few close friends, who shared that they felt similarly. We have decided to make a list of hobbies and activities and try them together, free of embarrassment or shame. I wholeheartedly believe that it is going to be such a positive change in my life, and I’m excited to be able to have this opportunity!
