Accidents happen. Forget to take the pill, the condom breaks, something goes wrong. What happens if we decide to take that little extra preventative caution? That’s where Plan B comes in, also known as the morning after pill. But what does it actually do? How does it work? Can it work more than once? Here are all the Plan B questions answered so if mistakes happen, the risks can be properly gauged before taking it.

How does it work?

This medication can prevent pregnancy by temporarily stopping the egg being released from the ovary and preventing fertilization. It also prevents fertilized eggs that have been released from attaching to the uterus. It is NOT a form of abortion because it is preventing fertilization not terminating a fertilized egg.

How soon should it be taken?

The one pill supplement should be taken within three days (seventy-two hours) of unprotected sex. Ideally it should be taken within twelve hours. Early action means more effective.

Is it safe to take more than once?

Plan B is by no means a long-term effective way to prevent pregnancy. Not only can it mess with the reproductive organs but it lessens its effectiveness with each use. If it’s taken more than once in a single cycle it can also mess directly with the menstrual cycle. It should only be used when absolutely necessary.

What’s the downside?

It can sometimes induce vomiting for certain women. If this happens within two hours it could mean that the medication didn’t settle properly so it might not work. It is also not as effective in women who weigh more than 165 lbs.

Are there side effects?

Like any medication or supplement Plan B can cause an array of side effects depending on how the body reacts to it. Mild symptoms include fatigue, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain and spotting. Make sure to read the full label or ask the pharmacist about any other possible symptoms.

There’s no shame in taking proper precautions but always make sure to know all the information about a medication like this before taking it. The most important thing to remember is that Plan B is not something to be taking consistently; not only for health reasons but because it can be less effective with increased usage. Be safe. Be educated. Be aware.

Happy Hunting.
