Being a twin, I am naturally drawn to all media that is about twins. Twitches – a portmanteau of twins and witches- is no exception. It follows two girls, Alex and Cam, who find out on their 21st birthday that not only are they an identical twin, but they are actually witches that possess magical powers. Talk about a birthday surprise! As it was released in 2005, I wanted to rewatch it this Halloween season to see how it holds up the inaccuracy of being a twin.

One thing I really connected to was how despite being separated at birth, they instantly shared a connection with one another. As soon as they touch for the first time, it created a burst of energy and released their magical powers. I like how it wasn’t until they were reintroduced when Alex went to the store to look for a job at the same time Cam is shopping that they were able to discover their abilities. While they always had the magic on their own, it wasn’t until they were together that they were able to be powerful. At the end of the movie, Alex is told Cam is powerless without her when trying to defeat “The Darkness” that killed their father and took over their land. Once together, their powers saved their kingdom in a way that only happens at the end of a Disney movie.

As a twin, I can definitely relate to the connection that they shared, instantly acting as if they knew each other their whole lives. While I have known my twin for all of mine, this is exactly how we act when we are together. As college is the first time we have been separated from each other for extended periods of time, it’s nice to see a reminder that no matter how far, the connection is always there.
