A Look At Third-Party Candidates

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

With all the heated drama between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, it’s almost hard not to forget there are two other candidates.  Jill Stein is the candidate chosen for the Green Party, which is based on the principles of green politics, such as social justice, environmentalism, and nonviolence.  Gary Johnson is running for the Libertarian Party, where they believe in individual rights controlling the government.

Jill Stein

Jill Stein was born on May 14, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois.  She was raised as a Reform Jewish, but considers herself agnostic.  She is an American Physician, activist, and politician who received her degree from Harvard.

She is increasingly concerned about the connection between people’s health and the quality of their local environment, which is why she takes activism so seriously. She was also the nominee for the Green Party in 2012.  She currently has two percent of the public vote.

Comedian Mark Thomas fully supports the Green Party.

“Climate change is the most important issue and they are the only party who have campaigned from the start and hopefully to the finish of this problem,” he said. “And actually, we have to address this, we don’t have much time and the Green Party are the only folk who can do it.”

Gary Johnson

Gary Johnson was born on Jan 1, 1953 in Minot, North Dakota.  He was raised as a Lutheran.  He received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of New Mexico in 1975.  He ran for president in 2000 and 2012, in addition to his 2016 running.

Wasteful spending, taxes, term limits, jobs, criminal justice reform, and education are issues that he feels strongly about. Legalizing drugs happen to be one of the issues he feels the most strongly about.  He said, “Half of crime is drug-related; legalizing drugs cuts crime.”  Johnson currently has about four percent of the public vote.

Drew Carey, an American actor, comedian, sports executive, and game show host supports the Libertarian Party.

“The less, the better. As far as your personal goals are and what you actually want to do with your life, it should never have to do with the government. You should never depend on the government for your retirement, your financial security, for anything. If you do, you’re screwed,” Carey said.

Polls are currently low for third-party candidates, but every vote counts. Even though the Democratic and Republican parties usually dominate the polls, the Green Party and Libertarian Party have ideas that could change our country.

Polls will be open on November 8 from 7am to 8pm, so go out and vote!
