This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

Alex McNemar is a full-time student at Paul Mitchell for esthetician and skincare. She works part-time as a lifeguard and a Walgreens customer service associate. In her free time, she likes hiking, kickboxing, and swimming.

Ariana: Why did you decide to go to esthetician school?

Alex: The reason I went is that I had a passion for skin and helping people. I always knew I wanted to start my own business. That leads me to want a have a career path in esthetics.

Ariana: What is your normal day like(at school)?

Alex: I get in at 9:30 and we start with theory in the morning. We have our lunch break at 12 and when we get back at 12:30 we practice what we learned until 5.

Ariana: What are your career goals?

Alex: I want to start a business focused on holistic healing combined with my esthetic background. I have been thinking about going to holistic health after I finish school.

Ariana: What is one beauty tip you think the HC audience should know?

Alex: The biggest tip I want to share is the importance of sunscreen because it is preventive and one of the leading causes of early aging and skin damage. There’s also a myth that if you’re more melanated you don’t need sunscreen but it’s important.

Ariana: What do you do for work?

Alex: I work at Albertus Magnus as a swimming instructor and Walgreens as a customer service representative.

Ariana: How do you balance work and school?

Alex: It’s all about finding my work-life balance and making time for myself. I keep to my self-care routine because if nothing gets done. Not over-extending myself is important too.
