Mindfulness is defined as, “the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.” Although always being fully in control of your feelings sounds great, it is not always realistic. Losing control is easy when you are stressed and your schedule does not allow for time to relax. However, taking back control is possible if you notice the moments of clarity to practice mindfulness techniques.

When you wake up in the morning, take a few seconds to recognize how you are feeling. Do not think about the class you have to rush to or the ten assignments you have to complete. Be present with your feelings and recognize that anxiety or excitement and then start moving. Those few moments of peace reset your mind to confidently tackle the day.

During small break times between class or work, practice mindfulness meditation. Sit down, focus on breathing, and notice your thoughts. If you lack time during break time, try practicing meditation while brushing your teeth, doing dishes, working out, or driving. Mindfulness meditation has been proven to reduce stress, lower heart rate, and improve sleep.

Throughout the day, be present. When you are with others try not to think about other things. Be active in the conversation. When you are alone, tackle the task at hand. Work on one assignment at a time. When relaxing, allow yourself to completely check out.

Lastly, notice your thoughts and feelings before you fall asleep. Reflect on your interactions throughout the day. Recognize how you feel. Forgive yourself for mistakes you made. Create a plan on how you can make tomorrow even better.
