Recently, hedgehogs have been becoming a super popular pet option, but since these animals are so unique, you may have some questions about them. Luckily for you, I’ve been doing a ton of research about hedgehogs as pets, and am currently on the waiting list to adopt a cute little hedgie from a breeder this summer. Keep reading to get all of your questions about hedgehogs as pets answered!

Q: Can I have a hedgehog as a pet in my state?

A: Well, the answer depends on what state you live in. For most of the states, the answer to this question is yes, you can legally have a hedgehog as a pet. In Idaho and Oregon, only certain species of hedgehogs can be kept as pets. In New Jersey, Wyoming, and Wisconsin, a permit is required in order to have a pet hedgehog. In California, Hawaii, Georgia, New York City, and Washington D.C., it is currently illegal to keep hedgehogs as pets.

Q: Do hedgehogs make good pets?

A: Yes! Having a pet hedgehog doesn’t require much more effort than it does to have a pet dog. However, keep in mind that the needs of hedgehogs and dogs are very different!

Q: What about the quills?

A: Yes, hedgehogs do have quills. However, don’t fret! Hedgehogs only stick out their quills when they’re feeling scared or uncomfortable, so as long as you handle your hedgehog with care, you won’t get poked. It can be a little weird to hold your pet hedgehog at first, but as they get used to you and you get used to them, you’ll figure out a system that works for both you and your hedgie.

Q: What do I feed a hedgehog?

A: While you can buy hedgehog food, most brands of dry/wet cat food offer the same essential nutrients and are typically a cheaper option when it comes to feeding your hedgehog. One thing to keep in mind when feeding your new hedgehog is to be careful not to overfeed! Hedgehogs love to eat and will eat food when they’re offered it, making it super easy for them to gain weight and overeat.

Q: Are hedgehogs nocturnal?

A: Yes, hedgehogs are nocturnal animals. This means that they’ll be more active at night and sleep during the day, waking up around our dinner time.

Q: Are hedgehogs a good option for people with other pet allergies? A: Yes! They have very little dander, so they make great pets for people with allergies.

Obviously, this isn’t a complete list when it comes to the ins-and-outs of owning a pet hedgehog, but I hope it helped answer some of your questions. If adopting your own cute little hedgie is something you’re interested in, make sure you do your research and choose a good, reputable hedgehog breeder. Let me know in the comments below if you have a pet hedgehog, and if you don’t, would you consider getting one?
