This Valentines Day, Celebrate the Single Life!

By Emma Augustine

As Valentine’s Day approaches, practically everything you see in cyberspace is created for “that special someone”.  If you have a significant other in your life, that’s great! But what do you do on Valentine’s Day as a single lady? (I generally resort to a shared Netflix account and an abundance of snacks).  I have some alternative suggestions for your Valentine’s Day plans. If you think my solution is originally from the hit TV show Parks and Recreation, then you are absolutely correct.  Yes, ladies.  TREAT YO SELF.  Why not have a “Galentine’s Day?”

It’s important to celebrate friends as well as significant others.  If you think about it, there is no holiday that is committed to the celebration of good friends (and aren’t they hard to come by?).

So, I have a list of ways to celebrate friendship in your life when February 14th rolls around.  Seize the day and let the people you love know how you feel about them.

1.  The best way to show your love? Homemade Valentines! Remember those Lisa Frank Valentines you would give your classmates in elementary school?  Use the same idea, a photo, a punch line, a “to” and “from” label and voila! You have a personalized Valentine!  Extra points for Mean Girls references.

2.  Get pampered.

Going to a Spa and also saving money is the true meaning of “treat yo self”

3.  The Frog Pond in Boston has free ice –skating!  Even if you don’t know how to ice skate, grab a couple friends and go on an adventure in the city.  A few blocks away, there is a delicious and well-priced restaurant, Rita’s, where you can get great quesadillas and margaritas after a skate.

4.  Harvard Square will be bustling with activity.  Check out the beautiful Beat Hotel, which will host a series of musical guests on February 14th.  If you are more in the mood to see some acoustic guitar or indie artists, look into The Middle East Upstairs.  If you are craving some hip-hop in your life, head to The Middle East Downstairs, where a member of Bone Thugs n’ Harmony will be playing.

5.  There is nothing better than getting surprise gifts.  Consider participating in (or starting) a Valentine’s Day gift exchange with some friends.  This can be a way to put some time into making or buying a personalized gift, and receiving a Valentine’s Day surprise.

Here are a few gift ideas for your friends!

A mix CD of songs you are both in love with!

Collage of anything from photos of you and your friends to the magical Beyonce.

When all else fails, stick to an ecard.
