Since its release, Abbott Elementary has received rave reviews. Former Buzzfeed actor Quinta Brunson shares with us a beautifully written show based on her own experiences in the Philadelphia school system as well as observing her mother, who was a teacher. Abbott Elementary takes us through the crazy school days and the lives of the teachers who work there, and the connections they make with students and each other. The two seasons of Abbott Elementary have brought many awards, such as the Golden Globe’s Best Comedy TV Series. With interview style cuts very similar to The Office and Parks and Recreation, the show proves itself to be incredibly funny and well-written. This brings us to the question, is it accurate? As a student who is currently in the last semester of her student teaching experience, I can say absolutely.
As someone who has experience with many different grade levels and different types of schools, I was so excited to watch a show about teaching. I was instantly hooked! It was refreshing to see the situations I deal with often as a teacher reflected in popular media and portrayed in a relatable light. I really enjoy how they don’t shy away from issues that other teachers are seeing in schools, touching on topics such as budgeting concerns and staffing shortages in school. As a teacher working in a city, I see many of the ups and downs of living in a city area portrayed in Abbott Elementary that I similarly see in my experiences. Aside from the teacher’s point of view, it is one of the funniest shows I’ve watched! I cannot imagine better actors for each of the roles, and Brunson’s writing is just phenomenal. I would recommend this show to anyone, teacher or not!
