You Snooze, You Lose: 5 Ways To Help You Stop Sleeping In

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

I’m fairly certain that at least 90% of us are not morning people, and I’m even more certain that many of us are prone to pressing that pesky snooze button…every day. So here are a few things you can do or change to make sure you’re out of your duvet cave exactly when you plan to be, rather than three hours later.

1.       Alarm sound

There is absolutely NO POINT having twinkly fairy tiptoe as your alarm tone; it’ll send you straight back to dreamland. Try something a little more startling. If there’s nothing suitable on your phone, record yourself doing a nice shrill scream and use that.

2.       Brief Shower

If you really can’t stand having an alarm that’ll have you jumping out of your skin, scare yourself awake another way. Place a tall glass of icy water on top of your phone before you go to sleep, so when you come to pick it up and press snooze, the glass tips over onto your face. That’ll wake you right up.

3.       Temptation

Make yourself a sandwich or something before you go to bed and put it somewhere you’ll easily spot when you wake up. I don’t know about you, but if I see food I usually want to eat it there and then, so you’re bound to want to get up for an immediate breakfast. N.B. A common mistake made here is eating the snack before you get off to sleep/during your sleep. To avoid this, provide yourself with multiple snacks to keep you occupied throughout the night.

4.       Hide the Phone

Need I say more? If you’re in the right mindset, this can make a great game as part of your morning routine. You could even set several alarms on different devices, making yourself a compulsory treasure hunt. Fun, right? Of course not, but at least it gets you out of bed for a good 15 minutes.

5.       Roll

This also requires a little preparation: arrange a landing zone next to your bed so that when the time comes to wake up, you don’t seriously injure yourself. Although it seems like a massive effort to take the plunge and roll right off your bed, it’ll certainly give you that hit you need in the morning. Be careful not to make your landing zone too comfortable as the entire mission will then become completely pointless!
