Why Prison Break Is Better Than Breaking Bad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

With the winter and spring months now behind us (fingers crossed), we can prise ourselves away from our Netflix accounts and out into the rare glimpses of sunshine that Lancaster provides. Although before I minimise that Netflix browser, which now seems to be a fixed tab on Google Chrome for me, I do have a view on one of Netflix’s most popular programmes ever which could be set to cause a stir.

After months of nagging, my boyfriend finally backed down and we started watching Breaking Bad together at the start of first term. From the reviews I had read I was expecting hours and hours of television gold with so many twists and turns it would make my brain ache. I figured I’d be glued to Netflix letting it role onto the next episode and the next and the next, forgetting to eat, sleep and study because I just couldn’t wait to watch more.

But am I the only one who feels Breaking Bad was a massive disappointment and was completely over-hyped?

I do appreciate the storyline but did you not find yourself drifting from episode to episode waiting for something to happen? I wanted it to blow my mind and leave me with a Breaking Bad shaped hole in my heart that no other series could ever replace but the ending was really rather rubbish. We saw it coming a mile away.

Yes, I was engrossed in season one but I recall sitting there eating Doritos and watching “Fly” (episode ten, season three) and thinking ‘how much longer do I have to endure of this boring, predictable load of mediocre tv?’  We carried on but just failed to see how it has been named the greatest series of all-time.

On the other hand, at the start of second term I scouted out Netflix once more and found a series which I had not really heard anything about- Prison Break.

We finished the final episode two weeks ago and my jaw still aches from holding it constantly open due to the unbelievable amount of spills, thrills, shocks and back stabbing in just 40 minutes. I never had this medical issue with Breaking Bad, instead I was diagnosed with drooping eye syndrome and cba.

If you often find yourself getting bored with the two main storylines of Breaking Bad then do not fear. Prison Break has at least three storylines on the go at once, increasing to seven or eight at times.

Finally, am I the only one who sits there watching Breaking Bad wondering where the eye candy is at? Aaron Paul just does not do it for I am afraid. But in Prison Break you’re in for a six-packed, muscly-armed, chiselled jaw filled treat. Dominic Purcell’s unbuttoned shirts sure kept me gripped when the plot thinned out. C’mon girls I’m not the only one that has a thing for a man in an unbuttoned shirt!

All in all, Breaking Bad is good and I would say watch it. Although the reviews and outstanding accolades that the show has received may be a slight exaggeration, for me Prison Break is by far superior in terms of breath-taking drama.
