Dry skin may seem like an inevitable symptom of the winter months that seemingly strikes without fail. Here are tips, tricks, and products that will most definitely save you from the dry skin scaries and obtain a glowy complexion year-round.

Habits and products to get into:

Before we delve into the vast list of products that can up your skin game this winter, it’s important to note that your lifestyle and habits are going to matter more than the products you invest in. However, combining the two can result in some serious skin love and a complexion not at all phased by harsh winter weather.

First thing’s first: cleansing!

Cleansing your skin is a rule to live by year-round. It is especially important in the context of this article because cleansing your skin is essentially a way of priming it for other important steps that follow, such as toning or moisturizing.

It is smart to invest in a cleanser that is suitable for your skin-type, as you would want to avoid a cleanser that would make your skin oilier or dryer. Clinique’s cleansing products are great to invest in, and a personal favorite is their cleanser that targets redness and dry skin.

Top tip? Cleanse your skin once after you wake up, and once before you go to bed.

Make sure to moisturize!

In terms of moisturizing, take your entire body into consideration. While your face is likely to dry out due to the severe nature of chilly wind against your skin (“wind burn”) as well as the lack of humidity in the air, the rest of your body is also likely to suffer in the winter months. As a way to combat this, moisturizing twice a day will benefit your skin in the long run. Burts Bee’s is a go-to of mine, making sure to specifically use their body lotions that cater to dry skin and 24-hour hydration. Additionally, using Aquaphor on your hands overnight, as well as any other areas more exposed to the elements, will have you waking up with hydrated skin.

When moisturizing your face, it is smart to find a lighter “day” moisturizer and a heavier “night” moisturizer that you can apply before you go to bed. A combination of both will be extremely successful to battle dry skin.

Don’t forget your lips!

Dry lips are a result from lack of hydration(you’re supposed to drink about eight 8-oz glasses of water a day!) and being overexposed to the cold in the winter. Some great lip products that aid in battling dryness include Kiehl’s Lip balm #1 and their Hydrating Overnight Lip Treatment.

Any extras?

Some last tips include getting into the habit of toning your skin everyday and using serums or oils for some extra skin-care love. Before you know it, the warmer months will swing back around and, for some of us, dry skin will be a problem of last winter. It’s smart to take care of dry skin issues while you’re ahead, so that you continue these habits year-round!
