Halloween Costumes: Integrating the Expression of Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lafayette chapter.

This weekend my family will be hosting a pumpkin carving/costume contest Halloween party. The theme issued to everyone was Tim Burton. My family goes all out for Halloween but we’ve never had to conform to a theme before with respect to costumes. What has been difficult is choosing the Tim Burton character that speaks to each of us. But I found that after finding a piece of clothing you really like and finding a way to work with that, the character ends up finding you. Here’s a more general guide to creating your own costume on theme:

  1. Find an article of clothing (hat, jacket, shirt) that really speaks to you.
  2. See what character from the theme matches up to it.
  3. Find a picture of the character and try to match the costume as best you can with color or overall aesthetic (especially helps if you want to recreate the picture for instagram).
  4. Find a symbol for the character (ex. Alice in Wonderland has the drink me cup, Mad Hatter has the hat, etc etc) and integrate that into your costume.
  5. Mash it all together and have fun with it!

While it may be easier said than done this is a good way to find a costume in a hurry. During Halloweek I challenged myself to make each of my outfits for the day an homage to some character and through these steps it worked out pretty well. I had a sweater vest that was black and pink and suddenly I was in a black lace shirt, black skirt, black tights and the sweater vest and I was Draculaura from Monster High! I encourage you all to get into the Halloween spirit and be bold with your costumes and even everyday outfits. Halloween is a good reminder that clothing is one of the best ways to express yourselves. So go wear that outfit you’ve always wanted to wear, it never has to be a special occasion to break out your new favorite boots.
