As most of you may know and have seen, Shane Dawson decided to do an 8 part docu-series on Jake Paul. When people heard that Shane was going to be doing his series on Jake, he immediately received backlash because a lot of people don’t actually like Jake Paul. Then there were others (like me) that don’t really like Jake, but would watch anything Shane (and Andrew) put out because he’s an amazing Youtuber. The whole series was centered around the question: is Jake Paul a sociopath?

The first part of the series was Shane introducing who Jake Paul was and the drama he was involved in. Jake created what is known as Team 10 which is just a group of people who live in the same house together and create videos and vlogs together to post on their channels. I feel like the first part was necessary for the series to know who he is and why people don’t like him. I’ll be honest I truly never understood why I didn’t like him; it was just because other people didn’t. In the second part, Shane meets with a therapist to find out what the characteristics of a sociopath are. People criticized Shane in bringing in this therapist and talking to her because they felt like the series was getting too deep when it didn’t need to be. This video specifically was dark and serious which is why people had an issue with it. I personally feel like this episode was unnecessary considering the series sort of steers away from the initial question.

In the third part, Shane goes into Jake’s family. In his family are his father, his mother, and his brother Logan. Jake’s father taught him and Logan how to be competitive and they often stayed in this mindset all throughout their childhood and into present day. This comes into play later on in the series. After examining Jake’s family, he goes into examining his friends (a.k.a. the original Team 10) in the video “The Enemies of Jake Paul”. In Team 10 were the Martinez Twins, Alissa Violet, Nick Compton, Tessa Brooks, and others. I have never heard of these people or the drama they were all involved in but Shane explains all of that. He interviews Nick Compton and asks him about Jake, the pranks, why he left, and much more.

In part 5, “The World of Jake Paul,” is where we see Jake for the first time. Shane basically hangs out with him for a while and we get to see a different side of Jake. We learn about the Team 10 house, his relationship with his girlfriend Erika, and his Team 10 business because it essentially is a business. I personally liked Erika; I thought she was sweet and genuine, however I don’t know how I feel about Jake. He’s done some extreme pranks and some things that can’t be excused. In part 6, “The Secrets of Jake Paul,” Shane dives a little more into all the drama he’s been involved in. Basically an extension to part 5.

Part 7 is the part everyone was waiting for. The most known controversy Jake has been involved in is with his ex-girlfriend Alissa Violet. She came out with a video talking about all the emotional abuse she endured while living in the Team 10 house. Shane basically talks to her and asks her about her side of the story. I feel like Alissa was being honest. She was really nervous in talking about everything but I do believe she was being genuine. However I don’t agree with the part where she hooked up with Jake’s brother Logan, considering they already have this competitive relationship. I also don’t agree Jake should have done the things he did to her. They were both toxic for each other and they both hurt each other which is why I’m glad they decided to stop talking. In the last part, “Inside the Mind of Jake Paul,” we finally get to hear about Jake and his part of the situation. I do believe that it must have been hard for him to deal with Alissa and Logan sleeping together. But it doesn’t excuse the way he treated Alissa, and if you want the real tea: Logan is the sociopath, not Jake.

I really enjoyed the series because anything Shane puts out is amazing. However, I don’t know how I feel about Jake and I don’t know if I believe what he said about everything. I’m conflicted–the series was an emotional roller coaster because I want to believe Jake isn’t a bad person but he’s done things I don’t agree with. I want to believe Alissa because what she went through wasn’t okay…I guess I’ll never know who I believe in most.
