Curly Hair, Don’t Care: 5 Reasons to Flaunt Your Curls

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at La Verne chapter.

Magazine covers, T.V. shows, billboards, and movies all portray celebrities that are iconized, even coveted for their seemingly impossible beauty standards. This isn’t news to our generation, we all know the power and extensive use of Photoshop and editing standards, but what media hasn’t taught us to do yet, is how to deal with feeling sub par and confused.  Here’s why  I recently decided to forgo all the straighteners, forget beauty standards and just do me! All throughout my childhood, I struggled with my tightly curled hair, and seeing celebrity icons with impossibly smooth, perfectly curled, frizz-free hair, I found myself frustrated. It took reminding myself that celebrities and beauty icons are NOT gods, and they should not control our lives to the extent that we literally idolize them. Although this last statement goes against the grain, it is the key to happiness and being content with yourself in a highly appearance driven culture.

Here are 5 reasons to flaunt your curls:

1. Curls are unique-only 34 percent of women have wavy hair, and only 11 percent curly.

2. Leaving your hair curly is healthier for your hair, put away those styling tools!

3. Who doesn’t love free and natural accessories? That’s what curly hair is.

4. Curly hair makes you stand out, people will remember you.

5. Taylor Swift, Lorde and Beyoncé have all embraced their curly mane, you should too!

Who we are, what we know and how we act far exceeds what we look like or how smooth and manageable our hair is. After all, true beauty come from within; and that’s all the more reason to embrace those natural curls!
