What’s Your Next Move ?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

Someone recently asked me what I wanted to do after graduation. A question I should know the answer to, considering the approaching 6th month mark. But to be honest I don’t know. Its not like I don’t have ideas it’s just I have so many I don’t know which one to pick. He then goes to ask what are your goals in life and where do you see yourself in 5 years. Another question I could hardly answer. Out of nowhere I answered him though, I said my goal is to buy a house and turn it into a resource center for kids. That’s what I want to do, but I also believe that’s only one of my goals. He also asked me about money. I responded with “I want to be comfortable”. Comfortable in that I’m not living paycheck to paycheck, and that if I wanted to go on a last minute trip I would be able to with no worries. He then goes to ask, did you write any of this down. A goal is not a goal until you write it down. How will you know what you’re looking forward to if you have nowhere to backtrack it.

So what are you’re goals. Where do you desire to be in a year, or 5, or even 10. Set goals in hopes of accomplishing them before your goal time. So set yourself SMART GOALS. Specific measurable, achievable, realistic and timely goals. These goals will be just for you, you can share them with a friend but they’re not really for them. The goals will sometimes feel like you can’t obtain them and that’s why you write them down. So when you do, you’re able to look and say I did that. Expecting something to happen can sometimes be disappointing, but we must give ourselves enough time, so that it doesn’t feel like time is being wasted when picking our goals.

So after reading this, what do you want to do after graduation? Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years. You might not have a plan but do you have an ultimate goal? If not take 5 minutes to write down some of your goals. You desire to see them come true.
