On the Topic of Masturbation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

I overheard a couple of girls squealing about their friend—the odd and unusual harlot, so it seems—who apparently masturbates frequently. I shook my head, taken aback that masturbation is a weird topic to speak about or thing to do for some people. I kept my ears perked for the duration of that day, mainly because I consider myself to be a people-watcher. I realized that once you start listening to people speak, you can learn a great deal about the community you associate with. That day, I ended up over-hearing (I mean eavesdropping, let’s be honest) three separate discussions about who had sex with who and blowjobs.

It’s your body and you should know everything about it. It makes me sick seeing young girls pine for information (and instructions, basically) on how to give good “head.” I saw someone anonymously asking on Tumblr, “Hi guys, I’m fifteen. Any tips on how to give head? My boyfriend and I are celebrating our one month anniversary and I want to surprise him.”

It’s completely natural to be curious about things like blowjobs at a younger age. First you see it on TV. Next, you see a beautiful guy at the diner after the Friday night football game, and you replay that scene from TV in your head, except you don’t really understand the plot. I feel like women are more concerned with learning how to please the opposite sex rather than taking the time to learn how to please themselves.

Elizabeth Olsen, in her interview with Dazed and Confused Magazine said,“I think it’s weird that teenage girls know more about giving blowjobs than they do about masturbation… it makes me sick to my stomach that so many young girls think sex is just about a guy finishing.” She is completely right. It’s an awful truth that ¾ of women do not reach orgasm during sex, but God forbid a man gets blue-balled.

Women live with blueballs. Something that you must know how to do by the time you’ve hit your mid-twenties in order to survive any long work week, awful date, or pretty much any stressful time in your life is how to properly masturbate. Learn the way your body works, from the inside then out.
