My Nails, Not My Problem

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

After months and months of having acrylic nails, I decided to rip them off. I don’t really know what lead me to that decision. While I was bored in class I just started picking at them until they were about half on. It hurt so bad but I just kept doing it. I looked over to my left and my roommate started picking hers off too. By the end of class she only had her thumb nails on and was complaining about how thin and sore her nails were. We went home and I clipped the rest off and filed them down. Now my nails are just thin, ugly, sore nubs sitting on my finger tips. You don’t really realize how much you use your finger tips until they hurt like hell. I can’t even scrub my hair in the shower. I accidentally jam my fingers into things all the time and that was only brought to my attention when my nails became super thin and bendy and irritated.

It wasn’t all bad. Typing on a keyboard and texting has become much easier. My nails used to hit the wrong keys all the time. I know that even though it sucks now, once they feel better and get stronger my life will be so much easier. I won’t have to keep up with filling them anymore. I won’t have to pay $25 every three weeks to have someone else fill them. I won’t have to sit in that salon chair and feel uncomfortable while not knowing what the people who work there are talking about in their language.

I’ve decided that for now I just want natural nails. I don’t even want to paint them because I hate the way they look when they start to chip. This is practical for me and I honestly think it looks nicer. Natural nails look cleaner and you never have to worry about them growing out or chipping. They will always look like natural nails. I’m glad I got over the luxury of acrylic nails and discovered a new found love for my natural nails.
