It’s Not All About Paris: Why You Should Visit Strasbourg, France Instead

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

This past summer I experienced a traveling awakening, which provided me with enrichment in culture, history, and scenic beauty that took my breath away. It was my family’s first-time visiting Europe. We were on the Viking Rhine River cruise, which embarked a journey that started in the Netherlands, then headed to Germany and France before closing the tour in Germany again.

Each country had many aspects that I admired, however, Strasbourg, France is a city worth doting over. Strasbourg sits at the border of Germany, right along the Rhine River. It is well known that Paris has become indicative of mainstream culture, with its famous cafes that hold tasty croissants, high end fashion, romance, and, of course, the Eiffel Tower. However, I can guarantee you that Paris isn’t the end of all of tourist destinations. It is important to note that although I have never visited Paris, I would like to shed light onto smaller cities that hold charm and have little recognition. Strasbourg is home to ethereal canals that seem to appear in every direction. Every corner contains varieties of appealing restaurants and cafes, with dining outside being culturally appropriate. Roads and pathways are cobblestone, which accentuate the quaint historical atmosphere this city has to offer. With Strasbourg being on the border of Germany, it holds the duality of German and French culture! One of the most prominent points of history in Strasbourg is the Notre Dame Cathedral, which is gothic and Romanesque in style. Out of all three of the cathedrals I have gone to see (the other two being in Germany), this was the most remarkable yet because of the famous astronomical clock with artwork that is truly mind blowing. If you are someone who appreciates discovering new places, Strasbourg is the summer destination you don’t want to miss!
