This is to all the females in my life. I want to thank you. Even the females in my life who I disagree with and those I dislike. To the women that have come into my life and I don’t get along with, I hope you are healthy and happy. To the women in my life that have made a positive impact, there are no words that can express the gratitude I have for you all. I hope you are all living your dreams and continue to impact others the way you have impacted me. If I were to start listing all the women who have been in my life and impacted me in an encouraging way, this article would never end. So, I decided to focus on one of the most important women in my life. I’m sorry mom, but I decided to write about Laney.

Laney is my older sister. I’ve known her my entire life. We grew up sharing a room, our family, and all our toys. We pushed our beds together when we were younger. I feel bad for Laney because who knows how many times I kicked her or stole the blankets. I don’t know how she was willing to sleep next to me for all those years. Eventually we pushed our beds apart, but that never stops me from crawling into her bed. Well, I flop on top of her even when she says not to. By the way, Laney, I’m sorry for all the bruises I may have caused.

Laney and I are close in age. Only 18 months apart and we look nothing alike. Those teachers and friends who say we look alike must have been on something funny. Laney is tall and pale. She has curly strawberry blonde hair and gorgeous blue eyes. I, on the other hand, am short. I tan instead of burn. I have brown eyes and straight brown hair. We look so different, but we aren’t too different. Laney has taught me so much. She protected me growing up and still protects me even today.

Laney is the middle child. I can’t understand what it’s like to be the middle child, but it must be very frustrating. When ever she would get something, I would too. I got an email account before I knew what an email was because Laney got an email. We got everything together and I always thought it was so exciting, but any middle child would probably agree that it’s extremely infuriating. Though, to explain where I am coming from, I only wanted an email because my big sister was getting one. For the most part, that is why I always wanted something. It wasn’t that I wanted it, it’s that I wanted whatever my big sister has. But that wasn’t always why. Most of the time it was because I look up to Laney and if she had something, it made that something cool. We could have the same exact pencil, but Laney’s pencil will always be better because it’s her pencil. Unless we switch, then my old pencil is the best pencil because it’s her pencil now.

Of course, I didn’t feel this way just because Laney was my big sister. I felt this way because of who she is. Way back when I was in 5th grade, there was a raffle to go see Wicked on Broadway. Laney won and gave me her ticket. Her kindness is bottomless and this is just one example of that. She is my best friend no matter what. We fight and maybe sometimes there is no actual reason to us arguing, but we’re also sisters and not everything has to make sense. I’ve seen Laney go through hard times and she has definitely seen me go through my rough times. Through school, Laney has excelled with academics. College wasn’t easy, but it never is. Seeing her graduate from Drexel University brought me so much pride.

There is a recent cliché quote I found on Pinterest; aspire to inspire before we expire. I aspire to be as kind and as loving as my sister. My sister inspires me to be better and I hope we don’t expire for a long, long time. Laney is just getting started with the greatness she is putting on this Earth. People better watch out because Laney is going to do more than she is asked. I just ask her to be happy, but I know she will make sure others are happy first. I am one lucky sister to have Laney. I know we fight and have our disagreements, but I would never change anything. Laney, thanks for being there for me no matter what. Thanks for leading me through school and always hugging me in the hallways. Thanks for being more than my big sister, but for being my best friend. I love you.
