My favorite time of year is when we get a break from school for the holidays. I recently went book shopping and picked up some novels that I am looking forward to sitting down and catching up on my to-be-read list. Here’s a list of 5 recent books I’ve picked up and are looking forward to diving into over the holiday break.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

This is an autobiography by Maya Angelou about her childhood and the journey she takes overcoming racism, sexism, and the trauma of rape. I’ve been meaning to read this book for years but have never gotten around to it, and I can’t wait to finally read this impactful novel.

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

I recently watched Oliver & Company, which I haven’t seen since I was a little. It’s definitely inspired me to move Oliver Twist up to the top of my reading list.

Burned by Ellen Hopkins

I love these books by Ellen Hopkins, and I’m looking forward to this story of a young woman who grows up in a Mormon household with six sisters.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

This post-apocalyptic Pulitzer Prize winner has been on my Goodreads “Want to Read” page for months, and I found it for only a few dollars at a bookstore about a week ago. I’m sure it will live up to all of my expectations.

Night World No. 1: Secret Vampire; Daughters of Darkness; Spellbinder by L.J. Smith

I’ve devoured almost every Vampire Diaries novel by L.J. Smith, so my next series to conquer is the Night World series. The volume I bought has the first three stories inside, and I love revisiting YA novels that I saw in my middle school library.

There’s about a dozen more unread books sitting on my shelf, but they may have to wait until I have another length of time to read for pleasure. Though that won’t stop me from buying more books to look forward to.
