Why It’s Important To Vote

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Let’s start off with some facts.

  1. Young voters are more likely to support issues like a pathway to citizenship for immigrants and legalizing abortion than other age demographics.

  2. Young voters account for half of the voting population, but they are less likely to vote than older Americans.

  3. Young voters are the future.

If you’re anything like me, you’re sick of the way the government is. We’re failing women, minorities, and the younger generation. Our current administration wants to have control over women’s bodies, although only 19% of Congress members are women. Our current administration wants to keep immigrants out of America, although 81% of Congress members are white, thus their ancestors were immigrants. Our current administration often denies climate change, social security will more than likely not be around for us to have, and the economy is screwed. The average age of Congress members is 59.8 years old.

Our government wants to protect unborn children, but they made toddlers defend themselves at their own immigration hearings.

I cannot walk to my car at night without carrying my keys in between my fingers and having 911 pre-dialed on my phone, but our government approved a man accused of sexual assault to serve on the Supreme Court for LIFE.

Our president claims that he has been better to women than any other candidates, but he has said, and I quote:

“That must be a pretty picture, you dropping to your knees” to Brande Roderick, a female Celebrity Apprentice.

“A person who’s flat-chested is very hard to be a 10.”

“I’d look her right in that fat ugly face” about Rosie O’Donnell.

And I could go on, and on, and on about the disgusting things he has said to (and about) women.

Women are important. Minorities are important. Our future is important. Our current government is not showing any of these things.

Every vote counts and it’s easier than ever to be informed about upcoming elections and candidates. All it takes is a Google search, and finding a candidate you resonate with is at your fingertips. The youth vote is important, and even if you don’t care about politics, you might in 4 years. Learn about your candidates and what they believe in. Speak up, make a choice, and take part in the election to protect your interests in your first few years in the real world.
