Reviewing Kali Uchis’ “Red Moon in Venus”

If you have not listened to Red Moon in Venus yet, what have you been doing this past month? This ethereal, R&B album has been on repeat for me ever since it came out on March 3rd, 2023. Kali Uchis teased fans with two singles, “Moonlight” and “I Wish You Roses” before releasing the full album. I will tell you right now as soon as I listened to these songs, I knew this album was going to be on repeat for the rest of the month.

The overall theme of this album is love in all its forms. According to Kali, the title of the album “reflects the divine femininity of the moon and Venus.” In the album, the red moon has an effect on Venus, the planet of love, showing the various aspects of love in an individual’s life. A red moon is often viewed as ominous since it is known to mess with people’s emotions, which is shown in the songs about heartbreak, desire, and happiness. Kali begins her album with songs about experiencing the first stages of romance with someone, which is heard in “Love Between,” “Worth the Wait,” and “Endlessly.” She focuses on how beautiful love between two people can be and how this love can strengthen both people. Toward the end of the album, she transitions to singing about self-love and growth, which is shown in tracks “Moral Conscience,” “Deserve Me,” and “Happy Now.” With this album, Kali wanted to capture all kinds of love which she absolutely did while also including different genres of songs.

My Personal favorites

“Endlessly”

I was hooked on this song as soon as I heard the funky, boppy instrumentals. The other songs on this album are quite different from this one, but I appreciate the diversity of genres in this album. Kali is in her lover-girl era with this song, and she knows that she deserves to be treated with love and respect.

“blue”

In this emotional, bittersweet song, Kali reminisces on missing someone who once played an important role in her life. “What’s the point of all the pretty things in the world if I don’t have you?” This line portrays a gap in one’s life now that their person is gone. The saxophone and guitar moments in this song add to the nostalgia. I swear I get chills every time I listen to “Blue.”

“Moonlight”

I feel like I am ascending every time I hear “Moonlight.” The smooth jams and instrumentals, my god. Kali talks about letting go of your stress and hanging out with your lover. Time freezes when you’re with the person you love and she portrays this beautifully in “Moonlight.”

“Love between…”

Similar to “Endlessly”, “Love Between…” has a groovy beat but is a bit slower. Kali focuses on the beauty of love between two people, opening both to a world of wonders. Love is a beautiful thing.

“All mine”

Kali is not letting anyone rain on her parade. “We’ll figure it out as we go, just you and me.” She focuses on the strength of a relationship, reminding us to forget the haters and be confident in ourselves.

“Hasta cuando”

Kali popped off with this diss track. “It’s sad that you’re still obsessed, keep lying on me.” Kali has long forgotten about her ex, but it seems like they’re not over their relationship despite them being in a new relationship. Kali does not let this affect her happiness, so she continues on with life not giving one single f*ck.

I know the year just began but I honestly think this might be my album of the year. I swear there are no skips on this album, so I highly recommend it. Also, this isn’t the last you’ll hear from Kali, as she confirmed that she will be dropping another album this year. So, get ready!
