I don’t know about anybody else, but I have been abnormally tired no matter how much I sleep. With school being back in full swing I have really struggled waking up for my morning classes. I need some liquid energy in the mornings to kickstart my day. A lot of people love drinking coffee in the mornings, but I’ve found that coffee tends to be pretty hard on my stomach. So I have been trying to find a substitute for coffee in my mornings. Almonds with almond milk Photo by Polina Tankilevitch from Pexels

A friend recently told me about a new popular kind of drink called yerba mate. Yerba mate is a herbal tea filled with caffeine. There are a few different brands, however, yerba mate is organic no matter which brand you purchase. Yerba mate is supposed to be an organic energy drink.

I bought a few cans at the Burge Union on the Lawrence campus. I grabbed two flavors: Berry Red, and Berry Blue. I have tried the Guayaki brand of yerba mate once, and it is delicious. You can buy that brand at a lot of grocery stores including Target. Unfortunately, the campus only sells the Yachak yerba mate, which I have yet to try. Each of the Yachak cans contains 160mg of “naturally occurring caffeine”. Personally, I think 160mg of caffeine will do the trick and get me out of bed. These are also supposed to be healthier than drinking a Bang Energy or a can of Monster.

I am really excited to start drinking yerba mate in the morning to wake me up. I have heard many great things about it, and it may be a healthier option than coffee. If you are like me, or you just don’t like coffee, try yerba mate. woman sitting on white bed stretching Photo by Bruce Mars from Unsplash
