If you’re like me and you’ve seen all of the classic horror movies, the new releases and Google’s “most recommended,” then you might be in need of a few fresh titles. So, in case you haven’t already seen them, here are a couple of somewhat unusual horror films that are currently available on Netflix. Hopefully they will help you fill up the remaining days of October before Halloween. The first five are my personal favorites.
1. American Mary (2012)
Written and Directed by Sylvia and Jen Soska
A young, semi-unstable medical student in need of money becomes involved in performing extreme body modifications.
2. We Are What We Are (2013)
Directed by Jim Mickle
The moral dilemmas of a cannibalisitc family…
3. Teeth (2007)
Directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein
Dark humor and violence. A great movie for girls but possibly a bit traumatic for the guys.
4. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010)
Directed by Eli Craig
A hilarious horror comedy that twists the well known teenagers-in-the-woods plot line.
5. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Directed by Quentin Tarantino
One of Tarantino’s lesser known movies — a combination of horror, crime and comedy with all of the violence, blood and vampires you could ask for.
6. Let the Right One In (2008)
Directed by Tomas Alfredson
A Swedish film that intertwines a supernatural horror story with young romance and the perfect amount of bloody murders.
7. The Others (2001)
Written and Directed by Alejandro Amenabar
A psychological thriller that challenges the basic formula for a ghost story.
8. The Village (2004)
Written and Directed by M Night Shyamalan
There is no lack in plot twists here. What exactly are the creatures in the forest and what time period is this anyway?
9. Would You Rather (2012)
Directed by David Guy Levy
The title says it all. A very real and gruesome game of Would You Rather.
10. Honeymoon (2014)
Directed by Leigh Janiak
When a couple honeymoons at a secluded cabin, something happens in the woods to make the husband question everything.
11. Devil’s Pass (2013)
Directed by Renny Harlin
Have you ever heard of The Dyatlov Pass Incident? This movie centers on that mystery, shot in the style of found footage.
12. The Pact (2012)
Directed by Nicholas McCarthy
What in the beginning you might believe to be a ghost story turns out to be anything but.
13. The Awakening (2011)
Directed by Nick Murphy
This one is a ghost story with a twist ending that I didn’t see coming.
