The Job Any Girl Would Kill For: The Search For The Royal Nanny

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

While searching for summer internships and job opportunities, I stumbled upon the most precious nugget of information. The ultimate job opportunity for someone with little experience that could lead to potentially any career imaginable has finally popped up. Liberal arts students who spend summer babysitting for petty cash, our prayers have been answered. And when God answers, he is generous. Red Alert, ladies: THE ROYAL COUPLE IS HIRING!

I REPEAT: PRINCE WILLIAM AND KATE MIDDLETON ARE LOOKING TO HIRE ONE LUCKY YOUNG LADY!!!

Now that we’re done fan girl-ing over the fact that the Duchess of Cambridge is willing to hire someone to babysit the future heir to the throne and the adorable princess currently growing in her belly, let’s take a closer look at exactly what the royal couple is seeking in their very own Mary Poppins/housemaid.

On March 5, the British Publication, The Lady, posted the official job listing for the position. Known as the leading publication “for elegant ladies with elegant minds”, the post requests someone who is willing to cook, clean, perform child and canine care, pick up the groceries and dry-cleaning, and run whatever errands will be needed, noting that “discretion and loyalty is paramount and a current valid UK license is essential.” For those of us who have seen The Devil Wears Prada, the job sounds like a cross between being Miranda Presley’s personal assistant and the world’s most elite babysitter.

Besides caring for the soon-to-be two royal babies and adorable royal dogs, this job provides housing arrangements, and you can name your own salary. Applicants were expected to send in a resume and cover letter, containing “your salary expectations.” Any enterprising young woman would be silly not to ask for the very best from the Duchess of Cambridge and take the chance to get her hands on some royal jewels.

In reality, however, this job is highly elite, and sometimes we forget that sometimes small jobs like nannies, housekeepers, personal assistants, secretaries, waitress and many more have access to some of the most powerful and prestigious people in the country, or in this case, the world. These people have something that us college undergraduates desperately need: networking skills and contacts!

So while we refresh our social media feed of Tumblr dashboards and BuzzFeed articles, eager to know which human we will spend the next years of our lives envying and admiring from afar as a glorified babysitter, we should look back at our own resumes and small career networks. Who knows? Maybe you know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody else whose brother’s girlfriend’s mom used to work for the King of Timbuktu.

Crazier things have happened, and for some girl somewhere in the UK right now, those crazy things are about to start very soon. I, for one, will be following the world’s coolest entry level job every step of the way. Personally, I hope it leads to another royal marriage. Prince Harry is still unmarried, and, although his bride won’t be married to the King, none of us would be disappointed to see the royal nanny turn into a bonafide Cinderella.
