Campus Celebrity: Brendan Casey ’14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

Whether he’s spending his time fulfilling his love for dogs or sailing the ocean blue, Brendan Casey is a busy guy. When he is not being a Kenyon lacrosse superstar, you can find Brendan trying to knock some things off his Kenyon bucket list or dreaming about returning to sea.

Age: 21
Class Year: 2014
Hometown: Chevy Chase, MD
Major: American studies/Environmental Studies concentration

HCK: Word is that you spent this summer on a boat in the SEA Semester Program. What are some things you learned?
BC: Wow I’m not sure where to start. Well, considering I was seasick for most of my time out there (about a month), life on a boat has definitely been the most physically and mentally grueling thing I’ve done so far. That being said it was also the best way I’ve ever spent a summer.

Can you elaborate?
I loved learning Celestial Navigation. I’m not a numbers person, but learning how to use geometry and basic arithmetic to plot a position on a chart was by far the coolest thing I learned. For the shore component, we took intensive courses in Nautical Science, Maritime Studies and Oceanography, and on the boat we took turns collecting data on plastic debris, jellyfish, seabirds, zooplankton, pteropods, and bioluminescent fish. I would love to go back to be a deckhand but we’ll see.

That’s awesome. Movign on to more Kenyon -related things…lacrosse! What position do you play and how long have you played for?
I played defense when I played hockey and when I started playing lacrosse in the 7th grade I just stuck with that position.

If you were stuck in a cave, what 3 things would you hope you had with you?
A rope, headlamp, and a warm jacket. (how practical!)

What is your dream job?
I really want to be a physical therapist for sporting dogs.

If you were a type of ice cream flavor which one would you be and why?
There is one ice cream flavor I like a lot that I used to get near my summer camp in NC.  I don’t remember the name of it but it’s blue raspberry with chili pepper flakes in it. It was a great combination of hot and cold. I’m not sure I’d ever want to be an ice cream flavor though…

If you wrote an autobiography, what would you call it?
If I could get the full story of “the missing years” of my dad’s life, then maybe I’d write about him instead of myself.

What would your ideal date be while living at Kenyon?
If you let me bring my dog wherever we go, it’d seal the deal. Better yet, if show up to a fancy dinner with your dog, then you’re one for the books.

What is your spirit animal?
A Great Dane.

We’re beginning to see a notable “dog” theme here. As a Campus Celebrity, we have to ask: who’s your celebrity crush?
It’s a close tie between Kristin Kreuk and Jennifer Lawrence.

What’s on your Kenyon bucket list?
Borrowing a professor’s dog for the day; having a beer on top of the library; taking all the cats and putting them in Abe Clardy’s room for one weekend while he has a rugby tournament (alternatives targets include Alex Koch, and Skya Diaz, in that order). I would also like to take this moment to announce I am accepting applications for accomplices.  For those listed above, the quality of their application may revoke their victim potential.

Favorite quote:
I don’t know if it’s necessarily my favorite but I’ve been finding it most applicable to my pre-adult life lately:
“Opportunity looks a lot like hard work” – Ashton Kutcher

What’s a song that you think best describes you?
“Bring It On Home to Me” by Sam Cooke

There you have it: a sports star, world traveler, experienced celstial navigator and dog enthusiast all wrapped into one. Is there anything he can’t do?

Ally Bruschi is a senior political science major at Kenyon College. She spent this past summer interning as a writer with both The Daily Meal, a digital media group  dedicated to "all things food and drink" and The Borgen Project, a non-profit organization that partners with U.S. policymakers to alleviate global poverty. Before entering the "real world" of jobs, however, Ally spent many summers as a counselor at an all-girls summer camp in Vermont, aka the most wonderful place on earth. A good book, a jar of peanut butter, a well-crafted Spotify playlist, and a lazy dog could get her through even the worst of days.
