2021 Halloween Costume Wins and Losses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

Well, November has begun, which means Halloween season is behind us. But before we look forward to Thanksgiving (or Christmas, because we seem to be celebrating that earlier and earlier every year), let’s reflect on some of the Halloween costumes we saw this past October 31.

I’m going to start off with my least favorite. Was your Halloween costume was made up of a sports jersey over a sweatshirt and some jeans? Congrats you had the worst costume ever. Do you know how many times I saw this over Halloweekend? Too many. If you want to dress as an athlete, you have to wear the whole uniform. If you are sporting this same look any given Sunday, it’s not a costume — it’s literally an outfit. I used to think that the sexy lingerie with cat ears was the least creative costume, but at least that requires some commitment. You have to look good. You have to wear skimpy clothes in cold weather, which I have to respect. Though it’s not super creative, it requires effort. This whole jersey thing is both uncreative and lazy.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have Lizzo. The opposite of the frat boy wearing a Patriots jersey is Lizzo. This year she knocked it out of the park with not one, not two, but three fantastic costumes. My favorite being her Baby Yoda one. She looked amazing and the pictures of her out and about in this costume are hilarious. So per usual — Lizzo wins.

If the elements of a good halloween costume are creativity and effort, then Justin Bieber dressed as a bear is not a good halloween costume. It really just looked like he was in a onesie. And I was very much bored.

Uniqueness will always make a cool costume. If something is overdone it becomes significantly less impressive. That being said, I have an exception…all of the Ted Lassos. It seemed like every time I turned a corner there was another Ted Lasso. I wasn’t mad about it — I think it actually got better every Ted Lasso I saw. The more Ted Lassos, the merrier. And I really think most people killed it. The girls walking around with mustaches, the picture of Tony Hawk skating while fully in costume, it was all great. The only Ted Lasso I didn’t appreciate was Mitt Romney’s…nice try Mitt, but no.

While I seemed to have formed passionate and perhaps arbitrary opinions about almost every costume I came across, there are still some that I can’t make up my mind on. For example, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s vaccine themed fits. I think I liked it? I mean they looked ridiculous for sure, and I kind of hated that Bloom’s name tag said Dr. DILF. Really, I couldn’t stop laughing at how silly Katy Perry looked, so I think I’m a fan.

The truth is I loved most of the Halloween costumes that I saw; even the arguably less creative costumes are way better than not dressing up at all. If you dressed up, it’s a Halloween win in my book. Unless you just put a jersey on…then it’s a Halloween loss. And if you try to pull that again next year, I will mock you.
