Netflix’s New Documentary Shows the Human Behind Mother Monster Herself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

On September 22, 2017, Lady Gaga released her full-length documentary on Netflix. “Gaga: Five foot Two” takes us behind the curtain of Mother Monster herself as she records her latest album, “Joanne.”

Directed by Chris Moukarbel, “Gaga: Five Foot Two” leaves nothing uncovered in the life of Stefani Germanotta (Gaga). Within the first 5 minutes Gaga tells us about her late relationship with actor Taylor Kinney by saying, “I just feel like my threshold for, like, bullshit with men…it’s just – I don’t have one anymore.” Which has since been turned into a meme of sorts with many sharing this quote agreeing with Gaga completely!

We witness Gaga in the heat of dealing with chronic pain due to breaking her hip on the Born This Way Tour in 2013. In an intense moment that anyone who has experienced chronic pain can relate too; we see Gaga stuck down in pain right before she is supposed to perform for Tony Bennet’s 90th birthday party. Luckily, she preserves, and we get the joy of experiencing Gaga perform a piano version of “Bad Romance,” which is for sure going to leave your wig officially snatched! After viewing Gaga broken down in pain unable to do anything, this scene is a beautiful and pure moment of serenity. Later in the film, Gaga visits a doctor and says, “I have chased this pain for five years,” she explains. “When I feel the adrenaline from my fans, I can fucking go. But it’s not like I’m not in pain.”

Gaga lets us into not only her life, but her family’s too. We get to see the beautiful moment of Gaga playing her song “Joanne” to her grandmother, which was written for Gaga’s late aunt who passed from Lupus at the age of 19. Gaga explains how this whole album is extremely personal as she wrote it for herself and her family.

There are few pages of Gaga’s life left unturned toward the end of the movie. We have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. I loved this documentary because it made her real. This worldwide superstar has experienced some of the same pain that I have gone through too, and I am sure many others. If this film has done anything it has only once again proven that Lady Gaga is a strong, well versed and independent #LadyBoss! Even if you don’t care for the singer this film is still a great look at a woman who is out here embracing her womanhood as we all should.
