Earlier this semester, I was simply just getting tired of the music I listen to. Nothing against my usual artists that I listen to, but listening to them I was getting very burnt out and bored of it. I wanted to find a new artist to listen to and I wanted them to be more unique. That’s when I stumbled across Laufey in my recommended music. The first song I listened to of hers was ‘Let You Break My Heart Again’ and I was completely blown away by her sound. It was so different than anything I had heard before, since she is considered a Jazz artist and her voice is much deeper than other female artists.

Laufey Lín Jónsdóttir, known professionally as Laufey, is a Chinese-Icelandic singer who is only 24 years old. She first became popular through social media due to her Jazz covers of songs. This created a platform for her and her followers demanded she drops her own music to stream. Her first EP, ‘Typical of Me’, was released in early 2021. Due to her unique music style, the EP was successful and she was able to start producing other music. My personal favorites from ‘Typical of Me’ are ‘Magnolia’, ‘Like the Movies’ and ‘Best Friend’. I really like the story behind ‘Best Friend’ because Laufey wrote it about her twin sister Junia and how she truly loves her.

The next year Laufey dropped an album, ‘Everything I Know About Love’. She was able to add more songs due to the success of ‘Typical of Me’ and actually was able to produce a full length album this time. The album has sixteen tracks, compared to the seven tracks on her EP. This helped her create a more cohesive album and she was able to experiment with the music used in her songs more. I think it is a truly beautiful and unique album, and some of my favorite songs of all time are on it. ‘Fragile’, ‘Valentine’ and ‘Falling Behind’ are my top three tracks off of the album. After this album’s success, Laufey did a live album with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. She covered a few songs from her EP, album and a few other songs she created especially for the live album. The sound of the live album is truly unique and I think everyone should listen to it.

Quickly after the successes of her last two albums, Laufey announced another album. This album is titled ‘Bewitched’ and it was marketed as much more of a Jazz vibe. I had gotten into her music about a month before it dropped so I was heavily anticipating more music from Laufey. ‘Bewitched’ is a slightly shorter album than ‘Everything I Know About Love’ but I do think it is a better album overall. My personal favorites from the album are ‘Haunted’, ‘California and Me’ and ‘Bewitched’. Since I had gotten into her music a little bit late, I had missed out on getting tickets to her tour which was disappointing. However, my roommate and I were able to get VIP tickets day of to go see her in Cleveland. The concert was truly one of the best I had ever been to and her voice was even better in person.
