How To Survive a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

One problem many students face when going away to college is the struggle of trying to make a long distance relationship work. Just because you two are apart, doesn’t mean your feelings have changed. If you’re in a committed relationship, it is worth your time and energy to make it work. It can be challenging to settle into your new life at college and still maintain the needs of your relationship, but here are some ways to help you and your partner remain connected.

Share your college experience with them

Make sure you are informing them on your new day-to-day experiences at college. Telling them all about campus, and even sending pictures, can help your partner feel as though they’re right there with you every day on campus.

Be Honest

If you’re having a hard time adjusting to being apart, talk to your partner about it. Make sure you fully express your feelings and do whatever is necessary to make things better. By being honest, you can gain a sense of assurance in each other. This will help strengthen your relationship.

Stay Positive

Making long distance work is not easy, but it is possible. It is important that both you and your partner keep a positive attitude to ensure that your relationship works out. Making important decisions should be done with a clear, positive mind set. When things get hard, just think about why you’ve been trying so long to make it work!

Communicate Daily

Communication is the most important part of any relationship. Make sure you communicate with your partner as frequently as possible. Miscommunication and misunderstandings can cause major problems, so avoid them at all costs.
